What Are They Looking At ? Sexy Nude Naive Caribbean Art , Swimming Pool Party

What Are They Looking At ? Sexy Nude Naive Caribbean Art , Swimming Pool Party

By Wilson Bigaud

Located in Miami, FL

A young man at a crowded upper-class Haitian swimming pool attracts attention. We see him only from the back in a Magritte-like pose. The transfixed expressions of some of the nubile bare-breasted bathing beauties and one man with his hands down his pants give us a clue that the mystery man is special. This is a fascinating work packed with drama and overflowing with pent-up emotion.
Bigaud's narrative is as complex as his figural composition of lookers and swimmers. Notice the sight lines of the lookers go back to front while the two swimmers go from left to right. The twenty-two figures are contained in the rectangular shape of the pool, which is pushed to the front of the picture plane. The cars of the pool partygoers are seen in the background with one witness. He is fully clothed and is most likely a chauffeur. The fully clothed female at the pool offering food is a servant. A boxy-looking radio with a pack of cigarettes and the style of the cars give glue to the date. Most Haitian art depicts average working people. The pool party departs from that tradition and shows life of the Haitian upper class. Most likely, this was painted in Petion-Ville. The higher the elevation in Port-au-Prince the more wealthy the homes. Although the artist's painting technique may be described as naive or lacking polish.
t's one of the reasons why the work radiates charm and interest. The painting is oversized with huge dimensions of 55 x 48 and will be a statement in any room. Wilson Bigaud is considered to be a Haitian master. The condition is good. Three repaired one-inch issues on the extreme center and upper right edge. Visible only on close inspection. Otherwise presents very well and is elegantly framed, ______________________________________ Haitian master Wilson Bigaud is renowned for works portraying everyday life and rites of passage—vodou rituals, fortune-tellers, weddings, cockfights, and carnivals—with voluminous figures and lucid colors. Born in Port-au-Prince, in 1946 Bigaud was among the first to attend DeWitt Peters’s Le Centre d’Art d’Haïti, where he studied with Hector Hyppolite...

Beam recognizes that a successful work of art “must develop its own personality…It must empower, engage or provoke the public’s attention.” One exhibition in particular, titled Owavino(1997-1998) [meaning last minute] held in Illinois—perhaps the pinnacle of media mastery—garnered Beam numerous reviews, attacks and responses, even after the exhibiton had closed, for his work Turkish Medal (1996-1997-2013). Nude Sitting

By Howard Rogers

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork "Sitting Nude" c.1990, is an oil painting on hardboard panel by noted American artist Howard Rogers, b.1932. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (panel) size is 8.85 x 11.85 inches, framed size is 17.75 x 21 inches. Framed in original wooden gold and grey frame, with fabric liner and gold bevel. It is in excellent condition, the frame have very small minor restorations, practically invisible. About the artist: Howard Rogers wanted to be an artist for as long as he could remember. "I had no idea what an artist was when I was a kid," he laughs. "But I had a distant cousin who had gone to art school and I saw some of his drawings. They really impressed me." Born and raised in San Diego, California, Rogers now focuses on the future: "I kind of enjoy today and tomorrow and to heck with yesterday." While in high school, Rogers took some art classes and served as an apprentice sign painter, eventually becoming a journeyman. He was also a member of his high school track team, competing in the high jump, the hurdles and cross-country, as well as doing some bike racing. Following a stint in the Army, he began training for the Olympics in bike racing, trying out in 1948, 1952 and 1956. Today, "I ride a stationary bike in front of my easel three times a week." After trying out for the 1956 Olympics...

Blond Nude with Cat - White on White Monochromatic

By Thornton Utz

Located in Miami, FL

Monochromatic white on white study of a blond nude on knees and on looking cat. The following is from Harriet Shaplan of Champaign, Illinois:My husband and I knew Maud and Thornton Utz when we lived on Siesta Key, Sarasota, FL. in the 1980s. We bought the Greenhouse Restaurant (now called the Summerhouse) and Thornton had a lovely nude painting (Greenhouse Nude) hanging at the base of the stairs that eventually made its way to our home where it hung for several years. Prints had been made of it and Thornton wanted it to hang in a more public place so the painting was moved to the Museum of Modern Art in Dallas.Later it was bought by a Frenchman named Francoise Gardinier who owned a phosphate plant in FL. He hung the Greenhouse Nude in a resort he bought on Longboat Key called Far Horizons and later moved it to France.I have 3 large original oil nudes painted by Thornton, one being "Snowfall" which was made into prints, and several prints from his nude collection. Thornton was also commissioned to do portraits of some famous people. . . Princess Grace of Monaco, Jimmy Carter and family, and a royal family in Europe whose name I don't remember. He also did lovely portraits of children.Thornton was one of the kindest, gentlest souls I have ever met and those qualities came through in his nude paintings, which are lovingly and tastefully done.I'm glad to have a found a way to help perpetuate the memory of Thornton Utz. He was truly a gifted artist and a wonderful person.Attached are excerpts Thornton's obituary as it appeared in the Sarasota Herald Tribune on Dec. 4, l999:Numerous examples of Thornton Utz's work dot the landscape of Sarasota. From buildings on siesta Key to the chapel windows of the Catholic church of the Incarnation, Utz left behind a county filled with memoirs of his artistic gift. The internationally known illustrator and painter died Wednesday. He was 85.Utz was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Memphis, Tenn., where he spent his young years doodling in textbooks. After discovering his artistic talent, he struggled to save enough money to attend art school in Chicago. With the country in a depression, Utz could afford only one year at the American Academy of the Arts, and though he studied there for only a short time,k he learned the secret to being a great artist: drawing continually. And draw Utz did, as well as paint, illustrate and design. Initial recognition of his work came for his illustrations. During the 1940s and '50s, Utz provided advertising illustrations for clients such as Coca-Cola, General Electric and Ford Motor Co. His work also graced more than 50 covers of the 'Saturday Evening Post.'International fame came with portraits of Princess Grace...
