Island Mountains and Boats by the Coast, Mid 20th Century Landscape
Located in Soquel, CA
Serene depiction of boats on the shore by Hildegarde Hamilton (American, 1989-1970). This beautiful mid-century coastal landscape shows a small, bright blue bay surrounded by palm trees, mountains, and colorful wildflowers. Signed in the lower right corner. Presented in a rustic frame. Board size: 19.75"H x 24"W Hildegarde Hume Hamilton (American, 1989-1970) was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1898. After her education there, and brief training at the age of six in art schools in Venice, Italy, while on a European sojourn with her father, she studied fine art at the Académie Julian, the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Grande Chaumière in Paris, France, during the 1920s and 1930s. After returning to the United States, Mrs. Hamilton studied at the Art Students League, New York, New York, and the Cincinnati Art Academy, Cincinnati, Ohio. Hamilton exhibited her topographical street-scenes and landscapes widely throughout the United States with shows at the Syracuse, New York, Museum of Fine Art; the University of Kentucky; the University of Georgia, and most importantly, New York City’s Society of Independent Artists from 1929 to 1933, 1938, 1939, 1943 and 1944. Hamilton’s paintings are included in the collections of Wesleyan College, Virginia Military Institute...

Rebecca at the Well
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Dr. James Henry Lancashire, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, by 1925; probably by descent to: Private Collection, Cumberland Foreside, Maine, until 2018 This unpublished panel is a characteristic work of the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend, an anonymous Florentine painter in the circle of Bartolommeo di Giovanni, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Sandro Botticelli. The artistic personality of the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend was independently recognized by Everett Fahy and Federico Zeri at roughly the same moment in time. Fahy originally dubbed this artist the Master of the Ryerson Panels but later adopted Zeri’s name for the artist, which derives from his eponymous works from the Samuel H. Kress collection (Figs. 1-2). Fahy posited that the artist was most likely a pupil of Ghirlandaio active from roughly 1480 to 1510, and that he may be identifiable with one of Ghirlandaio’s documented pupils to whom no works have been securely attributed, such as Niccolò Cieco, Jacopo dell’Indaco, or Baldino Baldinetti. The present painting was first attributed to this master by Everett Fahy in 1989, who became aware of its existence only after publishing his definitive studies on the artist. The surviving body of work by the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend is largely composed of series of panels treating the same theme. In addition to the works illustrating the legend of Apollo and Daphne, there are also series on the themes of Susanna and the Elders and the story of Saint Joseph, among others. The subject of the present panel is drawn from Genesis 24, the story of Isaac. It is possible that our painting relates to another work by the artist depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac formerly in the collection of E. A. McGuire in Dublin, Ireland (Fig. 3), and that these two panels were originally part of a decorative scheme based on the story of Isaac. Although the Master’s paintings of this type have traditionally been considered painted fronts of wedding chests, known as cassoni, the scale of these paintings and the fact that they are often part of a series indicates that they are more likely spalliera panels—paintings set into furniture or the wainscoting of a room. The biblical episode depicted in this painting centers on the theme of marriage, which suggests that this work was likely commissioned for the domestic interior of a newly married couple. The Master has transcribed into paint even the minute details of this Old Testament story, in which Abraham sends a servant to travel by camel to the land of his father and seek out a wife for his son Isaac. The servant is here shown at the well...

WILLIAM ANSLOW THORNLEY RBA Fl. late 19th Century Smoking Fish on the Shore by Moonlight oil on canvas, Signed and framed and St. Michaels Mount and Penzance fishing boats at Dusk A pair of Oils, framed in identical handmade gold frames. Beautiful and atmospheric examples by this endearingly popular 19th Century enigmatic Artist. William Thornley also signed himself Charles Thornely, W A Thornbery, Thornberry, Thornbury and Thornery. He was undoubtedly a prolific artist as the number of his London exhibits shows , though his work is extremely popular especially in recent years. At his best his work is exceptionally fine and professional, as these delicate paintings would attest to. He showed his work at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, Suffolk Street Galleries and various other notable societies. Thornley lived mainly in London and Hastings between 1858 and 1898. He painted a large number of paintings on the east and south coasts. His favourite painting time...

"The Bransford" Antonio Jacobsen, Marine Ship Portrait, Great Lakes Seascape
By Antonio Jacobsen
Located in New York, NY
Antonio Jacobsen The Bransford, 1903 Signed, inscribed "West Hoboken," and dated lower right Oil on canvas 22 x 50 inches Antonio Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family of violin makers. He was an accomplished string player and throughout his life music was to remain an avocation. He studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy, and emigrated to the the United States in 1871. He frequented the harbor around Battery Park, sketching, until he was hired by the Marvin Safe Company to decorate safes. Subsequently he received commissions from sea captains, ship owners, and steamship companies. The Old Dominion Line, the Fall River Line, and the White Star Line hired him to paint visual records of their entire fleets; he also received commissions from the Clyde, Black Ball, Mallory, Anchor, and the Red Star Lines. Jacobsen's style is often, though not exclusively, characterized by a flattened perspective. He had a complete understanding of ships and achieved great accuracy of detail in his works. In 1878 Jacobsen married; he remained in New York City until 1880, when he moved to Hoboken, New Jersey. His home became a gathering place for marine artists including James Bard, Fred Cozzens, Fred Pansing, James Buttersworth, Worden Wood...
