In 1993, a window of opportunity opened as a result of several different situations that were occurring. I was participating in an Artist-in-Residence program in Yellowstone National Park. At the same time, I had recently been asked to show my artwork in nearby Livingston, Montana. All of these events resulted in a major lifestyle change. My love of the outdoors and of fly-fishing drew me to make the transition. So here I am. I live in a small town nestled in the Rocky Mountains where life is the opposite of what it was in Los Angeles. - Joe Fay

House of Cards follows my continuing exploration of geometric, hard edge painting. The vast vocabulary of modern abstract art from the early 1900s to today, is always whirling inside of my brain. This painting feeds off of Brooklyn Strut and again starts as a drawn graphite grid which is then manipulated by spontaneous decisions concerning the amount of space between lines and what would happen when certain vertical shifts occur and what kind of composition arise. I've been repeating certain colors such as Powder Blue, Light Olive, Violet, Magenta, Orange in different combinations.
