I photograph miniature landscapes made from consumer waste. Each of my landscapes starts with the gathering of materials. Boxes, fast food containers, aluminum foil, Styrofoam packaging and other types of consumer waste are never hard to find. After they've been collected, I smash, boil, burn, and pulverize them into art media. Next, I compose the miniature landscapes while looking through a camera lens since the final product of my work is a photograph. My lighting setup is low-fi, I use desk...

Calliandra Californica - n. 2 (2016) - Cyanotype - abstract contemporary art
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a cyanotype on unprocessed paper. Singular piece. Signed en verso. Framing upon request - art exclusively at gallery. Inquire to view series, collection. Inquire to commission projects. Christine Nguyen is a Los Angeles based artist. She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. As an artist, she is inspired by literature, science, nature, astronomy, geology, marine biology. The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of her work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time. Using photography’s processes as a point of departure, Christine Nguyen’s pioneering spirit led her to begin manipulating negatives and onward–creating her own by cutting, layering, and adding on. Nguyen’s subsequent explorations embrace drawing...

Unsigned Provenance: Estate of the artist Dimensions: Sheet: 17 x 14"; Image: 5 5/8 x 3 3/4" Peter Marks (1935 -2010) Peter Marks was born in New York City on January 18, 1935. A lifetime New Yorker, Marks graduated from the High School of Music and Art in 1952 and Amherst College in 1956. After a brief stint as a graphic designer in publishing, Marks became a private art dealer and opened his gallery Peter Marks Works of Art, Inc. in 1960. During this time he specialized in the sale of Southeast Asian and Islamic antiquities and made many contributions to the field both as a dealer and an advocate of his profession. Above all, Marks was motivated by a strong desire to find great art and make it available to large audiences. After retiring from art dealing in 2002, Marks transformed his Manhattan gallery space into a studio where he drew prolifically and painted large non-objective canvasses. This time in his studio was a happy one for Marks, who viewed this period of his life not as retirement, but rather fulfillment, a fact that is confirmed by passionate artistic output in the years leading up to his passing in 2010. In 2012, Thomas French...

Russian Samizdat Art Conceptual Compass Sculpture Assemblage Gerlovin, Gerlovina
Located in Surfside, FL
Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin Compass, 1988 Aluminum sculpture, mixed media and c-print photograph construction, c-print, felt tip marker 12.5 h × 12.5w × 4 d in (30 × 30 × 6 cm) Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin were founding members of the underground conceptual movement Samizdat in the Soviet Union, described in their book Russian Samizdat Art. Based on a play of paradoxes, their work is rich with philosophic and mythological implications, reflected in their writing as well. Their book Concepts was published in Russia in 2012. The work by Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin is emphatically contemporary. The artist couple were part of the Moscow Conceptualists, their performance Costumes, from 1977, deepened their ongoing work with linguistic semiotic systems and their own bodies. Considering the context in which Gerlovina and Gerlovin made their work—that of political restrictions on public life, of unfreedom, and censorship—their collaborative togetherness must also be read as a space of possibility for political community and resistance. Rimma Gerlovina’s hair is featured prominently in the art of the Gerlovins as a constructing element of the body. Used for the linear drawings her braids transmit transpersonal waves reminiscent of an aura of live filaments. Long loose hairs function as threads of life; streaming in abundance, they allude to Aphrodisiac vitality and Samsonian strength. On the other hand, they are the haircloth worn during mourning and penitence. In New York they continued to make sculptural objects, and their photographic projects grew into an extended series called Photoglyphs. In their photographs, they use their own faces to explore the nature of thought and what lies beyond it. Since coming to the United States in 1980, they had many exhibitions in galleries and museums including the Art Institute of Chicago. The New Orleans Museum of Art launched a retrospective of their photography, which traveled to fifteen cities. Group exhibitions include the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, Washington D.C., Bonn Kunsthalle, Germany, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, and others. Samizdat or “self-published” began in the Soviet Union, and Samizdat art consists mainly of books and magazines published and distributed by the artists who made them. Samizdat art has sources in the innovative books and magazines turned out by the early 20th century Russian avant-garde—artists and writers like Olga Rozanova, Vladimir Mayakovsky, El Lissitzky, and Alexander Rodchenko. Artists as varied as Alexander Archipenko, Leon Bakst, Marc Chagall, Naum Gabo, Alexandra Exter...

Foxes
Located in New York, NY
17"x22" Inkjet on aluminum, found objects (Big Red Fox, Little Red Fox), ceramic, vinyl Melissa Pokorny's work focuses on the sense of space, and its role in structuring memory and identity. Her larger-scale sculptures, mixed media tableaus, and installations incorporate fragmented images of landscape and nature that highlight contested spaces, borders and boundaries between the natural world and our presence in it. Pokorny's recent work explores literal and metaphorical attachments , in a call-and-response between people, places, and things. The sense of absence prevails, emphasized by situations that illicit awareness of loss -- of losing one's was, or the loss of memory to time and distance. People go missing, and things are left behind. Mellissa Pokorny has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years. Her large scale, assemblage-based sculptural works have been widely exhibited at venues across the US. Recent solo shows at Platform Gallery in Seattle and Front Room Gallery in New York augment a long career of solo exhibitions, beginning with Gallery Paule Anglim, in San Francisco and continuing with Bodybuilder and Sportsman in Chicago. Selected group exhibitions include venues such as Yerba Buena Gardens, Southern Exposure, Victoria Room, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco, Foodhouse Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 400, Columbia College,The James Hotel, and Devening Projects +Editions in Chicago, and The Richard Peeler...
