Contemporary Art

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

Quebec artist Phillipe Pallafray has used several of the colours of the spectrum—yellow, orange, pink, red and violet to create a playful and modern rubik's cube-like sculpture. Pallafray uses industrial components—steel and stainless steel that he cuts, shapes, folds, and welds to create work designed to represent the duality of nature and the industrial world. “My geometrically shaped sculptures...

La Danzante

By Juan Fuentes

Located in Palm Springs, CA

Medium: Screenprint Year: 2019 Image Size: 24 x 24 inches Edition Size: 10 Image of a native American woman in traditional garb and ceremonial dance. As a cultural activist/artist/printmaker, Juan Fuentes has dedicated his career to being part of a global movement for social change. His works address issues relating to local communities of color, social justice, and international struggles for liberation. The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art. The Chicano, African American, Middle Eastern, Asian and Native American struggles for equality, peace and justice helped shape the themes that recur in his art. His development and introduction to silkscreen printing by mentors such as Rupert Garcia and Malaquias Montoya guided his subsequent community and political poster involvement. Fuentes' relief printing process follows closely the social realist tradition of Latin American artists such as Jose Guadalupe Posada...

The Night Prism

The Night Prism

By John Buck

Located in Lyons, CO

Color Woodcut, Edition 20. In “The Night Prism”, angled surfaces meander in an ornamental fashion delineating a human figure. This constructed body, the central motif of the print, is not meant to be an animated, mobile form, but a prism, a tool to refract or reflect light. A frenzy of activity occurs among the graphic elements in the background: air escapes from a balloon figure, multiple explosions detonate on the perimeter of a globe, surfaces appear to melt or sweat and wind blows. We seem to be witnessing a world gone wrong...

Havana No 6, Red - bold, bright, colorful, abstract, modernist, oil on canvas

By David Sorensen

Located in Bloomfield, ON

In this colourful abstract painting by David Sorensen, bright red draws the viewer’s eye. The Canadian artist completed a series of oils after visiting Havana, Cuba in 1999. The Havana series was created using a spatula and paintbrush. The result is highly textured pieces rendered in vivid colours—graphic shapes of lime green, orange, indigo and brown. A grid-like pattern of thick vertical and horizontal lines adds visual drama and contrast. “To me, there is still this celebration worth the paint. And it’s about an open door that the artist used to call muse.” David Sorensen Born in Vancouver Sorensen (1937-2011) studied at UBC and the Vancouver School of Art. His teachers were renowned—Arthur...
