Robert Brooks (American, 1922-1992) Portait of a Startled Woman Monumental oil on canvas Signed lower right 80 x 42 inches Born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1922, Robert Brooks embarked on his art career by winning modeling clay as a reward for good attendance at primary school. He became known for embellishing the margins of his school books with sketches of his friends and maybe teachers. He operated his own sign making business as a teenager, which supplied little money but lots of experience. Brooks also entered every poster and drawing competition in sight. Saturday morning classes at the Swain School of Design provided him with sound instructions in the principles of art, and as a high school senior in 1941, Brooks was awarded a scholarship to Boston's Vesper George School of art in a annual state-wide competition. During this year in Boston, he specialized in design, color and the theater arts and discovered "watercolor" as his favorite medium. At the end of his year Brooks was awarded a scholarship to continue by the Vesper George School but returned to New Bedford before the second year was out in order to work in the design department of a large textile printing concern. He was called to serve his country and after basic training, casual detachments and port of embarkation, he made his own private beachhead on New Caledonia in 1943, where he served as staff artist for The South Pacific Daily News. Brooks painted sketches and watercolors of the local scene during his daytime off-duty hours and won fast acclaim for his crisp, clean paintings...

Her parents moved to London in 1965 when she was eleven. As a teenager, she became a Beatles fan and often stood outside Abbey Road Studio hoping to catch sight of them. Her first rock shot was of Paul McCartney and two school friends taken on a Kodak Instamatic outside of his home in St. John’s Wood. Jill studied textile and then graphic design at the Central School of Art and Design in London. This figurative painting titled "ELEGANT" is an original artwork by Lauren Rinaldi made of oil on canvas. This piece measures 60"h x 30"w. Please note: Artwork will be on display at The State Museum of Pennsylvania (300 North St, Harrisburg, PA) from September 26, 2021 – January 2, 2022, and will be shipped to collectors after the museum exhibition. Rinaldi’s new series was inspired by the feminist debate on how women's appearances are constantly judged, criticized and dissected; often done so with the intent of diminishing their work and contributions. This issue is prevalent in all industries, but especially in the very public and important realm of politics. Throughout mainstream media, Rinaldi found countless examples of coverage depicting what a female politician was wearing and why it was deemed “inappropriate”, rather than discussing their policies. Typical of Rinaldi’s practice, most of the works found in Representative are not classic portraits, but zoomed in studies of the subject’s legs, shoes and body from the neck down. By doing so, the work focuses on the experiences and outside societal forces that these women, and women like them, have faced. To create the works in Representative, Rinaldi used sourced photographs of female politicians that felt meaningful and powerful to her. Before painting or drawing, Rinaldi manipulates each image through cropping, elongating or changing its composition, background and color. Color is especially important in Representative, as it is an expression that is frequently rejected or criticized in politics by men. Rinaldi uses vibrant jewel tones and color swaps, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s jacket from black to fuchsia, to represent the bold new ideas and diversity these women are bringing to United States politics. While Rinaldi does not specifically name any of her subjects, viewers will be able to recognize familiar leaders from across both sides of the aisle.
