About the Artist
Artist John Jaster paints in a style he describes as realistic impressions, capturing colorful views of his adventures across the Americas. "People always ask me how I get such deep brilliant colors," says John. "The answer is layers. Since acrylic paint dries mostly transparent, it requires multiple layers of paint to build up to a specific color. With the right lighting that depth of layering is like sunshine glistening through clear water." In college, John felt a pull towards computer science and pursued a career in software architecture. Description: An atmospheric Provençal village study by French Post Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, this work is inscribed with the location Cucuron, one of the most characterful villages in the Luberon region of Provence. Known for its medieval streets, sunlit squares and iconic terracotta tiled roofs, Cucuron has been a favourite of artists and filmmakers, celebrated for its bright Mediterranean light and distinctive architecture. Neveu captures a narrow village street framed by whitewashed buildings whose angular shadows fall sharply across the scene. The rich cobalt blue sky and warm orange rooftops create a striking contrast, while the cool purple shadows cast by the tall façades emphasise the heat and intensity of the Provençal sun. A glimpse of a blue doorway at the centre invites the viewer deeper into the winding street, while the stone wall and balcony details add architectural texture and charm. Executed in watercolour and gouache, the piece blends loose washes with decisive ink lines, typical of Neveu’s plein air studies. His ability to convey light, temperature, and architectural rhythm makes this a quintessential depiction of southern France. He lived in Bruges, and he was a Belgian painter and one of important Bruges School artists. His brother Frans Van der Smissen (1894-1964) was a sculptor. Leo was a painter of town views, sturdy of trees, landscapes, church interiors, still lifes, marines, interiors, portraits, and some nudes. He acts as a colourist, who practices sobriety. His preference, woodland scenes, a genre in which he has climbed to a solid refinement, particularly specific are the depiction of the tree trunks. His works, brushed concisely and boldly, betray a strong hand that bends the colour ranges to his will and he can adapt to all kinds of subjects. Leo studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts (1913 – 1919) with master teacher and artist Flori Van Acker and won several first prizes there. He studied also at Ghent Academy of Fine Arts (1920 – 1921) with master teachers Godron and Karel Tremerie and later at Dendermonde Academy of Fine Arts (1923 – 1924). Initially strongly influenced by the style of Courtens and the Dendermonde School, under the guidance of painter Ferdinand Willaert he evolved towards to Luminism.
