"Prospect Park, Brooklyn" Nathan Hoffman, New York City Impressionist Landscape

"Prospect Park, Brooklyn" Nathan Hoffman, New York City Impressionist Landscape

By Nathan Hoffman

Located in New York, NY

Born in Russia, the son of Friede (1878 – 1956) and Benjamin Hoffman (1878 – a. 1942). Benjamin was a dealer in mineral and seltzer water and the family resided on Snediker Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, just down the streetfrom the home where George Gershwin (1898 – 1937) was born. This area of Brooklyn, known as Brownsville, “witnessed the development of one of the largest communities of Eastern European Jewish immigrants during the last decade of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20 th century.” Today, little remains of this once thriving Jewish section of Brooklyn, which today houses many commercial and repair businesses. Hoffman studied at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design and in the art program at Cooper Union. His work at the National Academy received praise, and in 1921 he was awarded the 2nd prize and an honorable mention from the John Armstrong Chaloner Paris Prize Foundation at the National Academy, which allowed the recipient to study in Paris, France for as long as five years. The following year he was awarded the 1 st prize in the competition (with The Reform Advocate running the headline “Young Jew Wins Art Prize”) as well as the Suydam Bronze Medal for his achievements in the Academy’s Men’s Night Class. In 1923 he was residing in Long Branch, New Jersey, when he was awarded 4th place in the Chaloner competition. Early on, Hoffman exhibited his work throughout the city, including in 1925 with the recently organized Society of Independent Artists. He also received several solo exhibitions during the first part of his career, including one at Ferargil Galleries in 1929. In the spring of 1930 a solo exhibition of his portraits, including paintings and drawings, was held at at Babcock Galleries, where a reviewer noted: “Portraiture is obviously Mr. Hoffman’s specialty… his best work is characterized by a sensitive appreciation of character set down in a vigorous decisive statement. Later that same year, in August, he participated in Babcock’s summer exhibition where reviewer Jerome Klein, writing for The Baltimore Sun, felt Hoffman’s and other artists work was already becoming old fashioned, remarking “…if an effort toward accomplishment is to be made, it must be in the language of today. It is for that reason that such contemporaries as Eugene Higgins and Nathan Hoffman, in this show, seem artists of a bygone era…” The onset of the Great Depression appears to have slowed his success, as was the case for many up-and-coming artists. By 1939 Hoffman had become a gallerist in addition to being a painter, operating the collective exhibition space “Sutton Gallery,” which was originally located at 358 East 57th Street. There Hoffman exhibited his own works as well as those created by other prominent New York artists including David Burliuk (1882 – 1967), Charles C. Curran (1861 – 1942), Louis Eilshemius (1864 – 1941), Ann Goldthwaite (1869 – 1944), Maurice Kish (1895 – 1987), Lawrence Lebduska (1894 – 1966), Bradford Perin and Ellis Wilson...

Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan)

By Sue Bryan

Located in Hudson, NY

Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan) 18 x 24 x 2 inches Charcoal and acrylic on Primed Arches Paper Mounted on Wood Panel Excellent condition, Ready to hang as is This contemporary charcoal landscape drawing on arches paper was completed in 2021 by Sue Bryan. Born in Ireland, the artist uses landscapes from her childhood as inspiration for her current work primarily consisting of beautifully detailed charcoal drawings of trees and wooded landscapes. The artist captures exquisite detail and luminous light with the mere use of black and white charcoal and carbon pencil. The artist creates this tree through a blend of light and shadow that demonstrates the artist's masterful technique. Dark leaves and winding branches in black charcoal contrast elegantly against a light filled sky. There is sturdy wire installed on the back for easy hanging. Artist Statement: "My work is drawing based. As a native of Ireland, the landscape there has certainly shaped and influenced my own history. Many of my drawings are of places that have a deep personal association for me; an endeavor perhaps to stay connected to my roots. My aim is not only to convey a sense of place and belonging, but also an attempt to capture the ineffable, to evoke a feeling or a memory, to invite the viewer to look beyond and beneath what they see. My process is one of building up tones and textures using a combination of charcoal, carbon and graphite, all of which yield a wonderful range of blacks and grays that vary in density and transparency as much as in tonality. Much of drawing’s appeal to me lies in its very constraint, in its simplification, in the reduction of nature’s macrocosm to the coal-black char of organic matter. For me, the act of drawing is an end in itself." About the work: A native of Ireland, Sue Bryan explores the memories of youth rooted in her homeland's landscape. Employing charcoal on both paper and panel, these moody and misty studies reminds us that the water-locked terrain is not always sunny and green. Exquisite detail found in each tree branch or mass of tall grasses lining the horizon dominates the foreground. Light emulates from the background attempting to penetrate the density of opaque cloud cover. Bryan's small scale drawings convey an intimate and highly personal sense of place and belonging. "Mountain Lake in Autumn" American Mid Century Oil Painting on Canvas Landscape

By Marie Berger

Located in New York, NY

A wonderful depiction of mountain lake landscape in the country side. For this beautiful depiction of the mountains, we find distinct elements that are unique to the earlier works of Marie Berger. Among other things, Marie Berger's art is notable for its surrealist elements. In Still Life with Figure in a Desert Landscape, for example, she combines the seemingly incongruous images of a foreground still life composition with the almost infinite lines of perspective of the desert environment. The final result is one of provoking imagery and emotion. With joyful colors, this piece is filled with bold brushstrokes and impressive marks. Comes housed in a gold tone wood frame decorated with finely carved botanical elements and it is ready to hang with wire on verso. Art measures 16 x 20 inches Framed measures 19 x 23 inches A native of Fort Worth, Marie Friedman Berger was born March 9, 1913, the daughter of Will and Minnie Cohen Friedman. She was a graduate of Central High School, now R. L. Paschal, and attended Washington University, St. Louis School of Art. Marie married Jack Henry Berger on June 21, 1939, in Dallas; a marriage that lasted nearly 61 years. Mr. Berger died in 2000. Marie was an internationally renowned artist. Her works have been published by the Metropolitan Art Gallery of New York and shown as one of America's only artists in Italian art galleries. She was a recipient of the annual Benedictine Art Award. For many years she worked along side her late husband operating the Fashion Furniture Gallery on Camp Bowie Blvd. Marie Berger was a longtime member of Beth-El Congregation and she was also a full member of the Texas Fine Arts Association (Regional Director) and the Texas Watercolor Society. Among the awards presented to her for her art were the Benedictine Award, New York, and the Texas Fine Arts Jurors Award. She also owned and managed the Marie Berger Gallery, Fort Worth, which promoted the works of many rising American and Mexican artists during the 1950's and 1960's. She studied at Texas Christian University, and then at the St. Louis School of Fine Art and at Washington University, Missouri, which was founded as the Saint Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts in 1879 as part of Washington University in St. Louis. Her most common media is the use of oil, acrylic, watercolor, etching, lithograph, collagraph. During her successful career, she exhibited internationally at such institutions as the Bateau Lavar Gallery, Rome, the Rassagna permanente d'arte contemporanea, Veterbo, Italy, the Laguna Gloria, Austin, Texas, the Oklahoma Art...

He has exhibited works in the series one by one over the years, but in Fragments, his 2015 solo exhibition at Paradigm Gallery, a full collection of these works were on display together for the first time.
