Ian Mason was born in Brighton, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom in 1972. His formal education was with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, BA (HONORS). He received a degree in Fine Art (sculpture) – 1995 at the University of Brighton and later a Post Graduate Diploma in Interior Design – 2000. His interest lies in the structure and process of turning a subject into an image and the importance of the materials with which he works. You will notice that every mark he makes, although at first appearing loose and uncontrolled is actually very carefully laid down. His technique of thin washes and bold lines on the pristine canvas does not allow for error. Ian admires the work of the great Minimalists, Carl Andre, Donald Judd and the likes of Bruce Nauman especially in their use of process & truth to materials.
Ian’s work can be seen as minimal & often raw but this allows for a fresh approach of viewing the canine subject - especially profound as this type of imagery is so often overproduced & over sentimental. His paintings elevate ‘man’s best friend’ to the intelligent and considering animals they really are. Take time to look into them and you will be rewarded with a depth of sensitivity rarely seen in contemporary art.
“The work I make often involves showing the process or procedure of making. This results in a possibly ‘unfinished’ state, but I hope this engages & makes the viewer bring their own memory/narrative to finish or construct the rest of the piece.
The evidence of lines, rubbing out, mark making & drips also show this development of the image. The work is often produced in one sitting to achieve the freshness & the capturing of the image - producing a glimpse or outline.
I try to reinforce this with the use of materials reducing the work to monochrome, therefore highlighting areas of form/shape & not getting involved with the associations/ connections of colors which could result in an overworked or overproduced image.” …….......................Ian Mason on his own paintings
The paintings’ contemporary style has a strong impact on the viewer making his statement and devotion to dogs exquisitely clear. Ian Mason currently lives & works in Cornwall, UK.
Animal paintings depict the beauty and power of nature in an elegant way that can complement any room. Interacting with animals has long captured the imagination and has been interpreted in diverse artistic media.
Some of the oldest works of art have included animals, such as a cave painting found in Indonesia dating back more than 45,500 years that shows a wild pig in red ocher pigment. Animals have continued to appear in every era and style of art, from realism to Pop art and everything in between.
Some paintings portray animals in their natural habitat, highlighting the majesty of wild creatures roaming the plains, forests and jungles. These paintings often feature deer, tigers, wild mustangs and other wildlife. Others focus on domestic animals such as dogs — pay a visit to the Museum of the Dog if you don’t believe us — as well as cats and how they interact with the world and their owners.
Picking the right animal painting for a room — as well as knowing how to arrange your new wall art — can take time. But, in the end, it will tastefully reflect your interests and passions. While an expansive landscape painting helps open up a small space, hanging a horse painting in a den shows a love for equine culture and can invite interesting conversation.
