Medici Villa

Oil on canvas, signed and dated Rome 1894 lower right, title inscribed on verso “Villa Medici” (painting has been relined), and housed in a fine foliate giltwood frame.

The sculpture was originally recorded in 1638 at the Medici Villa, Rome and is now in the Uffizi in Florence, Italy.

That philosophical association gave the tortoise a lasting place in formal and informal garden design alike, from Medici villa grounds to the English cottage border.
