This FD451 sofa was designed by Peter Hvidt and produced by France and Son in Denmark during the 1960s. Part of the Minerva modular system, the design reflects a clear and structured approach to seating, where proportion, material, and function are carefully balanced.
The frame is crafted in solid teak, with a warm tone and defined grain. Unlike the daybed version, this example features fixed arms with pleated rattan panels, giving the piece a more contained and architectural presence. The absence of the folding mechanism results in a simpler construction, while maintaining the same visual language and comfort.
The proportions are low and horizontal, with a wide seating area supported by a light, well-resolved structure. The relationship between the solid wood frame, woven rattan panels, and upholstered cushions creates a balanced composition, typical of Hvidt’s work.
The sofa has been restored and is in excellent condition. The teak frame is structurally sound and well preserved, the rattan is clean and intact, and the upholstery presents as fresh and tailored.
We also have the matching FD451 daybed version available, as well as the original Minerva corner table...
