Adolphe Giraldon was born in Marseille, France. A pupil of François Louis Français and Luc-Olivier Merson, Giraldon moved to live in Glasgow, where he became Professor of Decorative Arts at the Glasgow School of Art. The Beaux Arts in Toulouse has several Giraldon’s views of Venice. As a lithographer, Adolphe Giraldon was a contributor to L'Estampe Moderne.

Mucha volunteered to produce a lithographic poster within two weeks, and on January 1, 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou was posted in the city, where it attracted much attention.
