Joan Miró (after) "Danseuse Espagnole" Design made in 1928, tapestry manufactured in 1965 Handwoven Wool Tapestry 81 x 60 in 'MIRO' signature woven on reverse Woven by Marie Cuttoli's Parisian Galerie for Galerie Lucie-Weill Seligmann in Paris Joan Miró was a versatile artist who explored many mediums, including painting, sculpture and ceramics. But one of the most interesting mediums he used was textile art. Miró created several rugs and fabrics throughout his career, which helped expand his unique aesthetic into new territory. Miró’s work often included abstracted figures, stars, moons, and other celestial bodies, which he used to create a visual language that was both personal and universal. He frequently incorporated found objects and materials into his work, such as rope, pebbles, and twigs. Miró’s work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world, and he is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. “Danseuse Espagnole," or "Spanish Dancer," was a design created by Joan Miró in 1928. This textile artwork is hand-woven with high-quality wool threads. The composition of the dancer is simple and expressive, with bold geometric shapes and vibrant colors typical of Miro’s style. The dancer is depicted in a dynamic posture, with legs apart and arms raised, evoking Spanish flamenco. The “DANSEUSE ESPAGNOLE” is considered one of the most iconic examples of Miro’s textile...

Joan Miró is known as one of the pioneers of Surrealism, but at times his work steered towards Fauvism and Expressionism as well. Joan Miró is famous because he was an influential artist during the early 20th century. Many historians credit him with pushing art away from the semi-realistic forms of earlier periods and toward full abstraction. Some of his most acclaimed works include The Farm, The Hunter, The Poetess and The Birth of the World. Shop a range of Joan Miró art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024
Joan Miró contributed to Surrealism by producing pieces that incorporated nonobjective imagery and evoked the subconscious. With his wide-ranging oeuvre, including strikingly original paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, metal engravings and murals, the Catalan modernist was a critical force in moving 20th-century art toward complete abstraction. In addition to impacting fellow Surrealists, the radical visual world Miró created with its expressive lines, signature symbols and biomorphic shapes influenced American Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and Color Field painters like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Joan Miró art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
To authenticate a Joan Miró piece, look for the artist's signature. Joan Miró hand-signed many of his works in a heavy script. Typically, he added only his last name and placed a period after the ó. Keep in mind that there are many reproductions of his works in circulation. As a result, the best way to authenticate the artist's work is to take your piece to a certified appraiser who can conduct research and thoroughly inspect the work to determine whether it is a genuine Miró. Shop a variety of Joan Miró from some of the world’s top galleries on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
What piece is Joan Miró’s most famous is a matter of debate. The Catalan modernist was a critical force in moving 20th-century art toward complete abstraction. Although often considered an early Surrealist because of his nonobjective imagery and evocation of the subconscious, he defies neat categorization. Some of his most well-known works include The Farm, The Harlequin’s Carnival, The Hunter, Painting (Blue Star), Bleu II, The Escape Ladder, Still Life with Old Shoe, May 68, The Tilled Field and Portrait of Vincent Nubiola. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Joan Miró art from some of the world’s top galleries.
