Can we please lay out the tables now? Can we allow the days? Once more permit the rivers and oceans to lie in their beds? May I close my eyes and reach out, breathing normally again, certain that the sky is filled with birds, and that you will remain? Or shall we send me back into the grey-blue chambers of disconnection and hollow ambition? A strange card to the wail of the unseen host, somewhere in Africa across the fields, turning over an unfortunate card and laying them slickly in the firelight, winking in such dark, knowing eyes. I was passing at some distance, circled and charmed to all ends, painting the figure in place of any other kind of sustenance, yet distracted and possessed by one who would undoubtedly deny it.
