Annie Leibovitz Art

American, b. 1949

Annie Leibovitz is arguably one of the best-known photographers in the world.

Few photographers are household names. Even fewer can claim that the portraits they create are often as famous as the subjects they depict. Leibovitz qualifies on both counts.

Leibovitz has provided the public with views of movie stars, politicians, athletes, artists — you name it. Being shot by Leibovitz has been a rite of passage for celebrities of every stripe for decades: You’re not really famous until you’ve sat for her.

Graydon Carter, the longtime editor in chief of Vanity Fair, where Leibovitz has been on staff since 1983, compares her to both Frans Hals, a Dutch master of the formal portrait, and Jane Austen, a knowing chronicler of her epoch.

Although she’s technically inched past the age of retirement, Leibovitz shows no signs of slowing down — the whole world remembers the buzz over the gorgeous, groundbreaking photos she took of Caitlyn Jenner for the cover of Vanity Fair, but the hubbub surrounding the Jenner images was nothing new for the acclaimed photographer.

Throughout her career, Leibovitz has created portraits that generate cultural conversation, whether outraged, admiring, shocked or some amalgam of all three.

In celebration of the artist's incomparable work ethic, shop some of Annie Leibovitz's most revered photography on 1stDibs.

Annie Leibovitz, XXL Edition Book

By Annie Leibovitz, TASCHEN

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Annie’s Big Book. 40 years of era-defining photography, now in an accessible edition. When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today, Annie Leibovitz, to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued by the challenge. The project took several years to develop and when it was finally published in 2014, it weighed in at 26 kg (57 pounds). This incredible collection is now available in an accessible XXL book format. Leibovitz drew on more than 40 years of work, starting with the photojournalism she did for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s through the conceptual portraits she made for Vanity Fair and Vogue. She selected iconic images—such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace—as well as portraits that had rarely, if ever, been seen before. The Annie Leibovitz SUMO...

Keith Haring book art 1982-1989 (Vintage Keith Haring)

By Keith Haring

Located in Brooklyn, NY

Keith Haring Cover Art 1982-1989: A set of 3 1980s books featuring original (offset) cover design by Keith Haring during his lifetime: Keith Haring 1982 for The Paris Review. Keith Haring 1986 for Brion Gysin The Last Museum. Keith Haring for AIDS: TRADING FEARS FOR FACTS (Hein). Medium: Set of 3 individual vintage books with offset illustrated cover art. 1982-1989. Measuring approximately: 4 x 7 inches each; soft cover books; the full edition of each; bound. Each in good to very good overall vintage condition. Minor age related wear. Each, unsigned from an edition of unknown. Highly collectible. _ Keith Haring (b. 1958 Reading, PA): Keith Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS and Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the Crack is Wack mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century. Related categories: Keith Haring 1982. Keith Haring book...

ARNOLD Schwarzenegger. Sigined Annie Leibovitz ChromaLuxe Aluminum Print & Book

By Annie Leibovitz

Located in Los Angeles, CA

He’s a four-time Mr. Universe, seven-time Mr. Olympia. His films have grossed four billion dollars worldwide. He won the California governor’s race by a landslide. He has one of the most recognizable faces in the world, an oft-imitated accent, and a physique still heralded as the most perfect ever built. He’s Arnold, the one and only, with first name recognition worldwide, and now with an Art Edition equal to his impressive size and unabashed ego. A decade of collaboration in the making, this photo tribute covers 75 years of Schwarzenegger, from the future Terminator’s impoverished childhood in Thal, Austria, to his rise as a young athlete, his journey to America to become the most celebrated bodybuilder of all time, to his career as the world’s leading action film star, then into the California governor’s mansion and beyond. Along the journey, Arnold’s muscular body, chiseled features, and charismatic personality made him a favorite subject of photographers, including Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol. The big book includes them all, while the smaller companion volume gives you more intimate images, and exclusive interviews with Arnold and directors Ivan Reitman and Bob Rafelson, and top bodybuilding legends. The Art Edition comes with a nearly life-size print of Arnold on the ski slopes by Annie Leibovitz for the June 1997 cover of Vanity Fair...

Art Edition “David Byrne” (No. 1–275). Hardcover volume in a slipcase, accompanied by the portrait David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986. For over 50 years, Annie Leibovitz has been creating a body of work that is unequaled in breadth and influence. From the viscerally immediate reportage made for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue, her pictures make up what is essentially a family album of our time. In 2014, in close collaboration with Annie, TASCHEN published a SUMO edition of her work: over 200 photographs, many of them famous (the naked John Lennon entwined in a last embrace with Yoko Ono, Patti Smith on fire) and some rarely, if ever, seen before. In 2022, to accommodate a wider audience, this volume was recreated as an unlimited XXL edition. The XXL volume is now available as an Art Edition in four different versions, each accompanied by a signed, numbered and framed dye-sublimation ChromaLuxe aluminum print. David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986 is included in an edition of 275 copies. In 1986, David Byrne wrote, directed and starred in his only feature film, True Stories. What Annie Leibovitz's most famous photo is called may be surprising. Most historians state that the image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono that the photographer snapped for the January 1981 cover of Rolling Stone is her most famous work. However, it does not have a title apart from “John Lennon and Yoko Ono, The Dakota, New York, December 8, 1980” which refers merely to its subjects and when and where it was taken (it has also appeared online as simply “John Lennon and Yoko Ono”). Leibovitz took the photo on the same day that John Lennon was assassinated outside his apartment. She has previously called it "the photograph of my life."
