Antoine Krieger Case Pieces and Storage Cabinets

French

By the start of the late 19th century, Maison Krieger was one of the largest furniture manufacturers in Paris, renowned throughout France and Europe for their quality workmanship and range of furnishings and decor.

The company was founded in 1826 by Bas-Rhin-born brothers Nicolas and Antoine Krieger, who distinguished themselves by producing exceptional reproductions of Empire furniture as well as luxury 18th-century furniture including in the styles of  Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Working with marble, mahogany, gilt and bronze, Maison Krieger produced elaborate cabinets and buffets, magnificently handcrafted consoles, center tables, chairs and other pieces. The firm also collaborated with master ébéniste François Linke, and the Maison Krieger label can be found on some of Linke’s works.

Throughout the mid to late 19th century, Maison Krieger underwent several transformations. In 1850, the company was renamed Antoine Krieger et Cie. Following Antoine’s death in 1856, his son-in-law took charge, changing the firm’s name to Cosse-Racault et Cie. Several years later, in 1880, the company became Krieger, Damon et Cie when it merged with furniture manufacturer Damon et Colin.

Despite their multiple reformations, Maison Krieger’s reputation for designing and producing elegant furniture never wavered, and they garnered critical acclaim at several major exhibitions of the 19th century.

In 1849, the firm exhibited at the Exposition des Produits de l’Industrie in Paris. They participated in the Great Exhibition in London two years later, winning a second-class medal for an oak sideboard they made for a client from the Ottoman Empire. In 1855, they exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris and again in 1900.

By the 1920s and 1930s, Maison Krieger had up to 1,000 employees working in their massive workshops in Faubourg St. Antoine. However, the company ceased production in 1945.

Today, Maison Krieger furniture continues to be highly coveted by antique collectors and connoisseurs of 18th-century reproductions and 19th-century pieces.

19th Century French Mahogany and Ormolu Bookcase in the Empire Style

By Antoine Krieger

Located in London, GB

An exceptional and fine library breakfront bookcase by Antoine Krieger of Paris In the Empire taste, this wonderful piece shows careful selection of matched flame mahogany veneers, contrasted by finely chiselled mercury gilded ormolu bronze mounts. The glazed, four door upper section is surmounted by ormolu laurel wreath victory garlands, and acanthus leaves to the cornice, the lower four blind doors having central caduceus mounts, emblematic of Mercury’s staff; the outer doors showing central Apollo masks, with acanthus leaves in a cruciform pattern; the cornered motifs being rosettes with conforming acanthus leaves; the pilaster columns are capped by stylised Tuscan capitals. The four oak lined drawers have Grecian Lyre backplates to the handles, and the locks are signed by the maker. The bookcase is elevated on toupie ‘cotton reel’ feet. The very finest workmanship has gone into this piece, as evinced by the ethereal ‘gold dust’ ormolu mounts, with the crispest of ciselure, and the breathtaking quality of the mahogany veneers. This piece, originally conceived by Percier and Fontaine, adopting the decoration from the Antique, is signed by Antoine Krieger of Paris. Circa 1860 Percier and Fontaine published in 1812 the ‘bon ton’ design collection, ‘Recueil des Decorations Interieurs...

19th C. French Empire Style Louis Philippe Period Secretaire Abattant

19th C. French Empire Style Louis Philippe Period Secretaire Abattant

Located in Forney, TX

A Louis Philippe period (1830–1848) fruitwood secretaire abattant fall front desk. Born in France in the mid-19th century, hand-crafted of rich solid fruitwood with warm wood tones, subtle grain detail, and nicely aged mellow patina over the whole. Finished in French Empire taste, having a molded cornice, concealed ogee frieze drawer with dovetail joinery, over fall front panel, opening to reveal original fitted interior gallery, with inset gilt tooled leather writing surface, large open shelf cubby, six drawers of various size, above double-door cabinet with brass shield escutcheon that opens to provide generous storage space, and an additional lower drawer for valuables hidden in the base molding, rising on square feet. Dimensions: (approx) 56.75" High 41" Wide, 17.5" Deep History/Back Story: Louis Philippe furniture had the same types and forms as the earlier French Restoration style, but with less decoration; comfort was the primary consideration. During the turbulent French Revolution and following Napoleon rule, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration, when he became the King of the French from 1830 to 1848. For the first time, the developing upper class–not the monarchy–influenced the progression of this style’s characteristics. However, King Louis Philippe’s personality still inspired many aspects.  His casual nature reflected this style’s informal, comfortable build. Much of the style was taken from the personality of the King himself. Unlike his Bourbon predecessors, he wore business dress...
