Japanese Lacquered Maki-E Fubako with Cranes Edo Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese lacquered wood fubako with fine maki-e decoration (Fubako is a box used to store document or small scroll painting), circa 18th century Edo period. The rectangular box features a deep lipped lid with slightly rounded corners, a conforming lower box that is almost entirely covered by the lid which has two bronze medallion rings with tasseled silk ties. The surface decoration of this fubako is of superb craftsmanship and visually arresting. On a black background sparsely sprinkled with shimmering gold powder, the pictorial imagery centers on a flock of seven cranes on a coastal landscape. Three in flights, four perching ashore, the dimensional composition is classic and often found in Japanese painting from Edo period. Each crane was depicted in a vivid unique motion, using relief takamaki-e and gold fundame for highlight. The crowns of the crane were all dotted in red, a distinct character of Japanese Crane (Grus Japonensis), which are one of the most beloved birds in Asia and symbol of longevity. The ocean waves were beautifully rendered in hiramaki-e with gold powder and combed silver lines. Rocks in takamaki-e with gold kirigane form the bottom anchor, representing the shoreline and it continues to the end of the lid. On the sides, the scenery extends and bundles of large sea grasses with seeds sway in the wind. The two bronze medallion rings were silvered and appear original. The interior was finished in a dense nashiji and all the trims in gold fundame. Accompany with this fubako is an old label indicating the age of the box which we agree with. Examining the fubako, it is evident that it was well used and of its original condition. A wonderful piece of Japanese lacquer art.

18th Century Still Life Painting Oil on Canvas by Giacomo Ceruti '1698 – 1767'
By Giacomo Antonio Melchiorre Ceruti
Located in Milan, IT
Giacomo Antonio Melchiorre Ceruti, known as "The Python" (Milan, 13 October 1698 - 28 August 1767). Still life with pumpkins, grapes and peaches Oil on canvas, 118 x 77 cm Expert opinion Prof. Alberto Crispo The unpublished painting illustrated here depicting fruit, tomatoes and a sports near an architectural element with a bas-relief figure, finds inescapable evidence in some still life of Giacomo Ceruti said the Python, painter counted among the most important exponents of the eighteenth century Italian. The comparison must be made from melons, which we see, quite similar, in a painting once in the Parma collection and then appeared at Colnaghi in London. It should also be noted a detail not less significant: the rocky bridge that delimits the composition at the bottom, which has an oblique termination and a rounded edge, returns really very similar in two paintings by Pitocchetto for Marshal Schulenburg, that of the museum of Kassel and the other already at the Galleria Silvano Lodi. The singularity of this still life in the context of the production of Giacomo Ceruti, which certainly explains the lack of recognition of its creator, at least until today. The canvas is in fact detached from most of the still paintings by the painter, as we have known so far, stages kitchen interiors, pantry corners and remnants of snacks, privileging a repertoire of food and poor objects and often repeated. In this case, the triumph of fruit and the ancient bas-relief rather recall the great Roman still life of the Baroque age, placing this evidence of Ceruti on a completely anomalous wavelength compared to the others. The most immediate comparisons are with the models of Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp 1631-Naples 1697) but also see the still lives of the Castles or Franz Werner von Tamm...
