Arthur Meltzer
American, 1893-1989
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1893 - 1989)
Born in 1893 to Lithuanian emigrants Louis E. and Cecelia Fineberg Meltzer in 1893, Arthur Meltzer learned the skills he would use as an adult to craft frames and furniture at an early age. He apprenticed as a young man at the Ford and McNutt Stained Glass Company, where he stayed for six years, until he enlisted in the Army to serve in World War I.
After his two-year service in the Army, Meltzer traveled to Philadelphia, where he had an uncle, and in 1919 he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He studied under Daniel Garber, Joseph T. Pearson, Jr., Hugh Breckenridge, Robert Vennoh and Arthur B. Carles. He was awarded the prestigious William E. Cresson Traveling Scholarship, and he traveled to Europe, where he painted and visited many museums throughout the continent.
He met his future wife, Paulette Van Roekens, at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore School of Art and Design), where he joined the faculty in 1924 and became the head of the Fine Arts Department. They married in 1927 and settled in Trevose, Pennsylvania, where they lived together for over sixty years.
Meltzer exhibited frequently at PAFA and won their Fellowship Prize in 1925. His work was exhibited, and won numerous prizes at institutions throughout the country, including the Philadelphia Sketch Club; the National Academy of Design; the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC; the Woodmere Art Gallery (now the Woodmere Art Museum); and the Phillips Mill Art Association in New Hope.
His paintings vary in subject matter, ranging from painting to life drawing, to anatomy and portraiture. His painterly style reveals itself in his many still lifes as well as in his beautifully rendered landscapes of Bucks and Berks Counties and Mystic, Connecticut. Meltzer died at the age of ninety-five at Abington Memorial Hospital.to

Surrealist Acrylic Painting on Fabriano Paper, Stacked Sheep and Green Eclipse
By Gozo
Located in FISTERRA, ES
Surrealist acrylic painting on paper featuring stacked sheep and a glowing green eclipse, created in 2024 by the Galician-based Gozo Collective. This original work blends figurative surrealism with visual poetry, portraying a quiet pastoral landscape transformed into a cosmic allegory. Three stylized sheep are stacked vertically at the center of the composition, their forms silhouetted against a gradient horizon in luminous tones of emerald, jade, and turquoise. The uppermost figure aligns with a radiant green halo, creating a fictional eclipse that blurs the boundary between celestial and terrestrial realms.
Painted with acrylic and spray paint on 400gsm Fabriano paper, the surface reveals a subtle misty texture achieved through layering and controlled dispersion. The result is both humorous and meditative, echoing themes of absurdity, gravity, and harmony.
This surrealist painting is unframed and ships flat in a protective sleeve, making it ideal for collectors seeking unique, biophilic, and symbolic artwork with a strong visual impact.

Frank Duffield (British, 1908-1982)
original watercolor painting on thick artist paper, unframed
size: 10.5 x 11.5 inches
condition: overall very good, minor wear to the edges as is normal for an unframed work, minor staining from age/ light to the surface
provenance: from a large private collection of this artists work in the UK
The artist:
Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982.
Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages":
Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. During the next 14 years exhibitions were held annually in Bristol and their first permanent home was Brandon Cottage which was made available to them through the good offices of fellow member James Fuller Eberle. When the Red Lodge...

"Aesclepius in Foreground" is a 12 x 16 inches watercolor on paper, snowy, winter landscape by American Impressionist painter Arthur Meltzer. The painting is titled on verso, signed twice "Arthur Meltzer" in the lower center and lower right, framed and matted under glass. Provenance: Private collection, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
