Benjamin Eisenstat Landscape Paintings

1915-2001

Born in Philadelphia in 1915, Benjamin Eisenstat studied at the Fleisher Art Memorial, Barnes Foundation, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After serving in the Second World War, he returned to Philadelphia with a portfolio of paintings and drawings and began a 55-year career in art during which he had 32 solo exhibitions and participated in group shows at the National Academy, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, American Watercolor Society, New York Society of Illustrators, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum and Chicago Art Institute, among others. Known for his quick wit and kind regard for students, Eisenstat was a popular instructor in Philadelphia art schools, teaching classes at the Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia Museum of Art and for 40 years at the University of the Arts, where he taught drawing, painting and illustration. Eisenstat served as the chair of the Illustration Program in the 70s and retired as a professor emeritus.
