Handsome set of 6 Mid-Century Modern 1300 Series dining chairs designed by Bill Stephens in 1967 for Knoll International. This set includes 2 armchairs and 4 side chairs and has a black bentwood frame and white with black tweed original upholstery. They are in wonderful vintage condition. The wood frame has been cleaned but still retains its original finish which does have some signs of use including nicks, dings, and missing paint. We have done a little touch up, but we love their patina. The fabric has been cleaned. All chairs have been inspected for sturdiness and stability and repaired/reglued as needed. Please see photos. This set, circa 1970s.
What an exciting and iconic set of dining chairs! This set of six belong to the 1300 Series chairs designed in 1967 by Bill Stephens for Knoll International. Most retain their Knoll International label with their 745 5th Avenue, New York, New York address dating them to 1970-1981 production. We know this as Knoll moved into 745 in 1970 and out in 1981. The 1300 Series chairs features a bentwood frame supporting a molded plastic seat. This set’s frame is in an ebony or black painted finish and the molded plastic seat is upholstered in a white with black tweed upholstery that we believe is original. We love their patina and would not change a thing, but we know some prefer perfect. We have priced them accordingly.
Bill Stephens born 1932 in Pennsylvania and graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He began his career with Knoll as an assistant prototype builder in 1960 for their Design and Development Group. After working up the ranks he became its director in 1971. He spear headed and worked on the creation and development of many projects and products during his time as director including several where he was the principle designer.
