Blanca Nieto Mixed Media

Spanish, b. 1991
Blanca Nieto’s artistic practice revolves around memory as a trace — what remains and endures despite absence and the inevitable passage of time. Through a sensitive and meditative approach, the artist explores how experiences, emotions, and fragments of life are preserved within the fragile architecture of memory. Her work investigates the tension between permanence and disappearance, reflecting on how what is remembered is often incomplete, blurred, or subtly transformed over time. Working primarily with textile-based processes, Blanca Nieto embraces the symbolic and poetic power of fabric as a medium capable of representing the very fabric of existence. Textile, in her practice, becomes both material and metaphor: a surface that holds marks, gestures, and layers of meaning. Through the use of translucent fabrics, gauze, and delicate layered structures, she constructs visual spaces where opacity and transparency coexist, evoking the way memories appear, overlap, and dissolve within the mind. In many of her works, the viewer encounters surfaces that seem almost immaterial. Veils of fabric allow light to pass through, creating subtle tonal variations and atmospheric fields that shift depending on the viewer’s perspective. These suspended layers suggest the fragile nature of recollection — memories that are present yet elusive, tangible yet constantly shifting. The visual language she develops is minimal and restrained, yet deeply evocative, inviting contemplation rather than immediate interpretation. Central to Blanca Nieto’s practice are the gestures of stitching, sewing, and darning. These acts are not merely decorative or technical processes but carry a strong conceptual weight. Stitching becomes a form of drawing in space, a quiet mark-making that registers time, care, and attention. Darning, traditionally associated with repairing worn or damaged fabric, acquires a symbolic dimension in her work: it becomes an act of preservation, a way of holding together what is fragile or fragmented. Through these gestures, the artist proposes a poetic reflection on repair and continuity. Just as fabrics can be mended, memories too can be reconstructed, reinterpreted, or delicately held together despite their imperfections. The visible threads and subtle marks across the surface of her works speak of these attempts to retain meaning and connection within the passage of time. Blanca Nieto’s compositions often appear understated at first glance, yet they reveal a complex dialogue between presence and absence. The viewer becomes aware of elements that are partially concealed, interrupted, or subtly emerging from beneath translucent layers. This interplay between what can be seen and what remains hidden mirrors the structure of memory itself — selective, layered, and constantly in transformation. Her work also invites reflection on perception. The materials she employs respond to light, shadow, and distance, creating visual experiences that shift as the viewer moves. What appears solid may dissolve into transparency; what seems minimal may reveal intricate details upon closer inspection. In this way, the artworks require time and attention, encouraging a slower and more contemplative mode of looking. Ultimately, Blanca Nieto’s practice explores the delicate threshold between the visible and the invisible.
