Lime Glow, Jo Barker, Colorful Contemporary Woven Textile

2010

About the Item

Lime Glow, Jo Barker, woven on cotton warp using wool, cotton, linen, silk, embroidery threads, 29" x 30.75" x 1.5", 2010 This colorful contemporary abstract textile is by British fiber artist, Jo Barker (b. 1963). Jo Barker designs and weaves tapestries based upon a long-term interest in color. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in numerous collections including the V&A Museum and the House of Lords. With interests in drawing and painting, the designs employ a range of marks, shapes and patterns, the aim being to create tapestries that are luminous, sensual and atmospheric. Barker explains her inspiration: "My current work is a part of an ongoing series of tapestries exploring themes initially inspired by qualities and patterns of light: transient and ephemeral starting points translated slowly into woven form. I am interested in the contradiction of the contrast in materials between the flowing nature of ink and paint and the illusion of fluidity translated into soft, richly colored yarns. The designs originate from simple gestural brush strokes in paint or ink with smudges of pastels. I am interested in our hands. In the spontaneous mark made by a simple gesture; traces of an event, a fleeting moment. The marks are then captured in the slow considered construction of tapestry weaving, built up gradually by hand. The design has been a guide. The tapestry then takes on its own life. I work intuitively. It is often only with the need to write statements like this that I rationalize the way that I work. I spend time looking at nature: growing plants, cycling in the Scottish countryside, walking in the landscape. All these details, the light, the weather, are distilled in the moment of making marks, combining colors and the eventual translation into the woven image."
