Bryson Burroughs

American, 1869-1934

Bryson Burroughs is one of the leading Classicists of his day. Burroughs served as Chief Curator of Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1909–34 and demonstrated a sustained interest in mythological scenes. Going back to his days as a student of Puvis de Chavannes in Paris, who was renowned for his murals in the Boston Public Library, Burroughs was interested in narrative painting, and used simplified modeling and muted, beautiful colors to emphasize the story.
