Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born into an illustrious family with numerous connections to the British Army. His parents, General Charles Lutyens and Frances Jane Fludger. His father was appointed Deputy Commissary General of the Army, a civilian appointment responsible for military procurement. He also served on the staff of General Moore in the Peninsular Campaign and wrote an impressive journal recording the horrors of the ill-fated Retreat on Corunna, escaping from Napoleon’s General Marshall Soult. Charles Lutyens spent his early adult life in the Army, joining the 20th foot and sailed with them in 1850 to serve in Canada. In 1857, he left the army to take up life as a professional artist. He based himself at Onslow Square, London where he soon established a fashionable practice. During this period, Lutyens became a friend of Sir Edwin Landseer, and after him, he named his son in 1863. His patrons included the Duchess of Montrose, Lord Bradford and the Duke of Portland. A companion painting to this was sold by Brightwells in 2018. He was an inventory officer serving in the 20th foot (which became The Lancashire Fusiliers), an artillery officer and later a sculptor, a painter of portraits, animals (particularly horses) and sporting scenes such as racing and hunting. Lutyens exhibited between 1861 and 1903 at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors, British Institution, Grosvenor Gallery, Dudley Museum & Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born in 1829 the son of Charles Lutyens, who was the Deputy Commissary General of the Forces and Frances Jane Fludger. With his family connection to the military it was no surprise that he joined the army in 1848 as Ensign, serving in the 20th Foot Regiment in Montreal, Canada. Whilst there, he met Mary Teresa Gallwey, daughter of Major Gallwey of Ireland and sister of Thomas Gallwey, the Governor of Montreal. They married on 28 November, 1852 and the couple went on to have 14 children in total. He returned to England having been promoted to Captain and lived in Hampshire where was appointed Instructor of Musketry to the regiment. He retired from the army in 1855, moving to London in the same year where he lived at 4 Allen Terrace, Kensington. He began pursuing an artistic career and most likely took art and sculpture lessons as well as studying animal anatomy. He made his debut at the British Institution from 1860 and by 1861 was living at 6 Palace Garden Terraces in Kensington. In 1862, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1903. He initially painted portraits but then developed his subjects to include animals, usually horses and hunting scenes. Many of the people in his paintings were notable horse owners such as King Edward and the Duke of Westminster as well as military figures. He is known to have sculpted clay models of animals which he used during his creative process. He also produced a number of scenes with cherubs which he became well known for. In the 1890s William Stott exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, mainly highly decorative works with subjects derived from classical mythology and literature. This painting was Stott's 1895 entry to the Royal Academy and was subsequently exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1896 and then on to the Berlin, VII Internationale Kunstausstellung 1897. Shakespeare was a favourite source for Victorian painters, and the tragic romance of Ophelia, from Hamlet, was an especially popular subject, featuring regularly in the Royal Academy exhibitions. The most popular and iconic image of Ophelia's death was, and is to this day, John Everett Millais's 1851 painting showing the confused and tragic Ophelia floating downstream on her back in a state of mad ecstasy, arms raised in a gesture of inevitable submission. However, although Stott chose not to pastiche this image, it seems highly likely that he was prompted to take up this subject, which had almost become a 'rite of passage' among Victorian painters, by the fact that in 1894 Millais's Ophelia was presented to the National Gallery of British Art by Sir Henry Tate. This idyllic late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Edward William Cooke RA (1811-1880) depicts a west-country cove with two cottages, donkeys, figures, and fishing boats. Cooke was a highly renowned painter of marine scenes and landscapes who exhibited extensively at London’s Royal Academy. From our elevated vantage point, the view extends between two quaint cottages and across the beach before sweeping around the sandy coastline. Crystalline waters lap the shore, where moored craft rest. It’s an accomplished rendering of a challenging composition. It’s enhanced by trees, which essentially ‘frame’ the right side, while a wooded track provides interest on the left. Cooke was a keen admirer of the Dutch old masters, and the spirit of the Golden Age underpins this splendid work. In diaries, he recorded how he travelled by donkey to access elevated spots in the southwest, so it’s conceivable that he did so here. In his catalogue raisonné, it lists a work from the same year titled ‘Bay with Donkeys’. Born in Pentonville, London, Cooke was raised in the company of accomplished artists as both his father, George Cooke (1781-1834), and his uncle, William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), were engravers. As such, they were associated with a circle of Victorian painters who aided Cooke’s early development. These included the highly regarded marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867), who provided frequent advice and inspiration. Indeed, as a teenager, Cooke produced numerous drawings after Stanfield’s works. A precocious talent, by the age of nine, he was already displaying an advanced understanding of engraving, particularly for ships, coupled with a natural, seemingly in-built skill as a draughtsman. Many of his early drawings depict pastoral landscapes after the masters, such as Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Paulus Potter (1625-1654), and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678). In an extraordinary turn of events, in 1820, his advanced abilities led to his first commission when he provided botanical illustrations for John Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Plants’.
