Portrait of a Family in an Interior - British 1950's art oil painting

By Charles Ernest Cundall

Located in Hagley, England

This interesting British Post Impressionist figurative interior oil painting is by noted artist Charles Cundall and entitled A Conversation Piece. Painted circa 1955 the composition is the interior of a living room with a couple and their two young children, cat and dog. It is full of fascinating details such as the display of porcelain figures in the wall unit, The wonky lampshade on the piano with lovely reflections in its metal base, the slightly shabby walls, the two inviting open doors to other rooms, the way the whole family are looking at the dog (of course!) as it eyes up the tray of tea. Perhaps the dog is in fact the conversation piece of the family and life revolves around him the way the painting does. Is it the artist's family? An excellent example of Cundall's work and life with a dog. Signed lower right. Provenance. Gallery label verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, image size is 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gallery frame, 39 inches by 34 inches framed and in good condition. Charles Cundall (1890-1971) - painter, potter and stained glass artist, born in Stratford, Lancashire. EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 INTERIEUR AUX FLEURS JAUNES signed "Grau Sala" (lower left) signed again, located, dated and titled "Grau Sala, Paris 61, Interieur aux fleurs jaunes" (on the reverse) oil on canvas 15 x 18-1/4 inches (38 x 46 cm.) framed: 23-1/2 x 26-1/2 (59.5 x 67 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Parisian Collection Interieur aux fleurs jaunes This interior with two female figures where also the plans made in different colors are drawing the composition. The abundant pictorial material distributed in geometric portions, gives life to the tablecloth and mother and daughter figures, in black and white colors of the jacket, while the black line takes care of the environments so as not to separate them. The fruit bowl and flowers give a cheerful touch with their pastel tones. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...

Arnold Friedman studied with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League in 1905 . Yet as he developed his style he abandoned the academic influence of his teacher. He started experimenting with materials and techniques. Friedmans intimate style recalls a variety of post-impressionist artists such as Pointillism of Pisarro, Vuillard and Nabis, and perhaps even Seurat. His thick application of paint has definitive textual impasto that was influenced by his trip to Paris in 1909. In "Museum Piece...

Charles Ernest Cundall was an esteemed and versatile British painter. He worked in both oils and watercolours and is today regarded as one of the most distinguished artist of the 20th century. His paintings are rich in texture, light and movement. He was very much an establishment artist of record. He portrayed Royal occasions, including the Coronation of 1954, major sporting events such as a test match at Lords and The Derby and important civic events and portraits. He is also known for his large panoramic landscapes and impressive city scenes. He was born 6th September 1890 in Stretford near Manchester in Lancashire, though spent some of his childhood in the Philippines and Australia. He was educated at Ackworth School and found his first employment as a designer of pottery and stained glass at the Pilkington Pottery Company, under Gordon Forsyth. Wishing to develop his artistic talent, he attended evening classes at the Manchester School of Art and Levenshulme Evening School. He was awarded the chief honours at the national competition of Schools of Art in 1908 and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. His studies here were interrupted by the Great War, in which he served in the Royal Fusiliers. He was seriously wounded in the right arm in 1917 and subsequently learnt to paint with his left hand. On his recovery, after the war, he returned to study at the RCA and then at the Slade School of Art, 1919-1920, before further studies in Paris at the Academie Colarossi and in Italy. Almost fifty when the Second World War broke out, Cundall first worked on short –term contracts for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee before being given a full-time salaried commission as an Admiralty artist to work on Merchant Navy subjects. He worked in the Thames, the Medway and in the West Country before being assigned to the Air Ministry in 1941 and was appointed official artist to the Royal Air Force and then the Royal Navy. He worked with Bomber Command and produced a series of works painted “For the Nation’s War Records”, including ‘Servicing a Sunderland”, ‘Battle of Britain Anniversary 1943’ and many others. He was sent to various places during the Second World War, including Quebec in 1944. At the end of the war King George VI purchased two of Cundall’s paintings showing war time activities in Windsor Great Park. After the war, Cundall accompanied the Royal family on their visit to South Africa aboard the battleship Vanguard. Cundall was a prolific exhibitor; he held his first solo exhibition in 1927 at Colnaghi’s. He became a mainstay of the Royal Academy, exhibiting there each and every year from 1923-1970. He also exhibited at the New English Arts club, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Leicester and Grosvenor Galleries in London and the Manchester City Art Gallery, Cundall was well-read and well-travelled; from the 1920s he had visited France, Normandy, Brittany and the South. In the 1930s he went to Sweden and Russia, and in the 1940s he went to Northern Ireland, the United States, France and Italy. His artistic ability was much respected and well recognised by all the major art bodies; he was elected a member of the New English Arts Club in 1924, a member of the Royal Society of Painters in 1933, an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in1936 and a member there in 1941. He was elected a Royal Academian in 1944. He was also a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers. Between his various travels Cundall was based in Whitehead’s Grove, Chelsea from 1918 onwards and he worked from Great Cheyne Studio, Cheyne Row, London. He was married to the artist Jacqueline Pieterson, herself a figurative artist of repute. He died at home on 4th November 1971. Today Cundall’s works can be found in many prestigious galleries and museums, including the National Maritime museum, Greenwich, Tate Britain, Imperial War Museum, the National Museum of Wales and Manchester City Art Gallery.
