Born in 1959 in the scenic Dordogne region of France, Daniel Castan’s artistic journey began in early childhood. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, he initially stepped away from the canvas, only returning to painting at age 40 for the sheer pleasure of the craft. By 48, he made the pivotal decision to leave everything behind and pursue his creative dreams professionally. Castan’s aesthetic is deeply informed by his early career travels to New York and Hong Kong. He developed a profound fascination with the urban world, specifically the exaggerated perspectives and verticality of the modern metropole. His paintings seek to recreate these intense graphic environments, where building lines vanish into the sky and avenues appear infinite. Working directly from memory and imagination rather than photographs, Castan utilizes alkyd oils. This medium behaves like traditional oil paint but incorporates a resin binder to accelerate drying, suiting his dynamic pace. His tool of choice is the palette knife, which allows him to sculpt thick pastes and carve architectural details into the material. The result is a vibrant collision of color and texture that captures the restless energy of the city.
