the french janine abraham and the dutch dirk jan rol met for the first time in 1955 in jacques dumonds studio. it immediately clicked, both privately and professionally. their first jointly designed furniture was shown at the salon des artistes decorateurs in 1956. in 1957 they opened a joint design studio. sometimes one plus one can make more than two, they say: the clash of rigour and straightforwardness with fantasy and intuition makes the combination of abraham and rol so special and productive. it resulted in many great designs, especially the wonderful bamboo chairs like this beautiful piece. a pair of basketware lounge chairs with black metal...

This beautiful woven rattan chair combines Janine Abraham’s imagination with Dirk Jan Rol’s architectural construction skills. From the circular woven center to the shell of the seat, the craft of the designer and manufacturer is outstanding. The basket seat is supported by a black lacquered metal frame. The geometric frame and legs show Rol’s background in architecture and add modernity to the organic material of the seat. This chair is equally eye-catching from up close and from a distance. French-born designer Janine Abraham studied at the École Camondo in Paris, graduating in 1952. She met Dutch-born designer Dirk Jan Rol at the studio of Jacques Dumond in 1955. The following year, in 1956, the pair showed their first collaborative work at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs.
