  • Pair of French Modern Neoclassical Armchairs / Lounge Chairs by Maison Jansen
    By Maison Jansen
    Located in New York, NY
A Rare and Important Pair of French MId-Century Modern Neoclassical Armchairs / Lounge chairs by Maison Jansen, Paris, circa 1940. These elegant chairs express the heart of Maison Jansen furniture, they are handmade of the finest materials and completely hand carved just as they were in the 18th Century. These elegant Neoclassical forms reflect the dignity of the past and and express the sobriety of the present. The legs are carved with saber legs in the rear and elegantly tapered legs in the front. The arm structures are gently curving and extend naturally all the way to the feet giving a sense of unlimited fluidity and movement. The back rails gently slope extending the continuous sense of line of the pieces. The lines are modern and sober throughout. The backrests are in a Curile form with an X form united by a circle centered with circular brass medallions adding a dynamic and distinctive finishing touches. The cross form and the circle form are ancient symbols relating earth and sky, masculine and feminine. Finally, the cushions are hand fitted around the leg structure allowing the chairs to breathe and to show off their architecture. And, the patina is hand finished in dark walnut. These Jansen Chairs are masterpieces of design and emblems of our history. They echo the greatness of one the world's leading design companies over a 100 year span., Documentation: An exact model of these chairs is pictured in Jansen Furniture, James Archer Abbott, Acanthus Press, New York, 2007, p. 12. the french janine abraham and the dutch dirk jan rol met for the first time in 1955 in jacques dumonds studio. it immediately clicked, both privately and professionally. their first jointly designed furniture was shown at the salon des artistes decorateurs in 1956. in 1957 they opened a joint design studio. sometimes one plus one can make more than two, they say: the clash of rigour and straightforwardness with fantasy and intuition makes the combination of abraham and rol so special and productive. it resulted in many great designs, especially the wonderful bamboo chairs like this beautiful piece. a pair of basketware lounge chairs with black metal...

  • Living Room Rattan Set by Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol - Chairs, Pouf, Mirror
By Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol
    Located in Roma, IT
Spectacular Mid-Century French Riviera complete living room set designed by Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol and made in France during the late 1950s. This incredibly rare sculptural rattan set is considered the "Nirvana" of French Riviera organic design. The set includes two twin basketware lounge chairs, a round ottoman and a large oval mirror. Everything is in exceptional conditions and comes from the same project, making the wonderful light honey color of the rattan extremely even between the different objects. The basketware chairs were fully hand-crafted in curved rattan and hand-woven wicker. The perfect proportions of these chairs are mind-blowing. The center of the seating is enriched by a wonderful work in woven wicker. The seats are supported by a stunning black enameled frame in bent metal. The geometric frame and legs show Rol’s background in architecture and add modernity to the organic material of the seat. The ottoman has a round hourglass-shaped structure made in single pieces of rattan curved at different angles and kept together by a perfect work of woven wicker. The chairs and the ottoman are completed by a round cushion in an elegant white boucle fabric. The spectacular build quality make this set light yet extremely sturdy. The large oval mirror that completes the set is also in amazing conditions and follows the same design of the rest of set. The uniqueness of this set and the amazing conditions make it incredibly charming and a must have for all the French Riviera style lovers.
