Dominique Polles Sculptures

b. 1945
Pollès is a French sculptor born in Paris in 1945. He is considered the inventor of “Organic Cubism” . Fascinated by anatomy, he studied medicine and also attended drawing classes at the Academy Charpentier. In 1966, he discovered sculpture from a friend, the sculptor Enzo Plazota. He affirmed: “Overnight, as soon as I discovered form, I felt that I could give up everything for it.” In 1970, he went to Carrara and has lived ever since in Pietrasanta. A few years later, he created his own foundry and almost exclusively uses bronze for his works. His creations represent a continuity to the tradition of Greek sculpture. They could be considered as a short-circuit between Brancusi's purity, Henry Moore's figurative abstraction, and Modigliani's lines and forms. His love for the female figure, for her sensuality, complexity, and shape, led him to explore mainly the female form. Since the beginning of his career, Pollès has created a singularly stylized cubistish form, which became his signature.

Pollès - Bronze Sculpture - Extalina Bronze 2/4 Created in 2015, casted in 2015 39 x 28 x 24 cm Signed and Numbered BIOGRAPHY Pollès was born in Paris in 1945 Like Leonard de Vinci in an anatomical search of perfection, of representation of movement, with an almost scientifical or medical glance, Pollès holds the utmost passion of anatomy: he learns about the human body, the complicated hank of muscles, movements of members and all the bodily mechanics. That’s why in 1964 he starts medicine school and along side goes to the Charpentier Academy where he follows art lessons. In 1966, he encountered sculpture in London where he was invited by his friend Enzo Plazota. This final step teaching him all the bases of sculpture. Pollès then decides to go to live in Italy, in Carrare, an important art place. He moved in 1970 and settled in Pietrasanta where he still lives. His sculptures, by creating a vision of the moving being, polished and smoothed, break the pureness of aestheticism. He just knows one theme, one model: the female form. According to Pollès, this is the most beautiful one, the most harmonious one. “When we are looking at a feminine body, it is splendid, it is musical”. His love of women, the sensuality, the complexity, the shapes and passions, brought him to explore the female form. Since the beginning he has created a singularly stylized cubist form; this becoming his signature form. All are cast in bronze by Pollès himself and made in a series of four with one artist's proof. His masterliness of the patina is considered unparalleled. The world's recognition of his craft is evidenced by the many awards he has won, the unique places he has shown and the prestigious private collections he is in, including that of Princess Caroline of Monaco. Pollès was recently honored in an exhibition outside Paris, sponsored by the French Government, called “Sculptors From Rodin to The Present”. He was one of the few living sculptors to be so honored; the others include Abakanowicz, Arman, Saint-Phalle & Wesselmann. Maurice Rheims, a respected Art Critic, and a member of The French Academy, has said “I consider Pollès to be one of the outstanding sculptors of our time.” His show in the Bagatelle Gardens in Paris in 1998 was a major honor as he was one of only two artists who have ever been allowed to present their work in the Bagatelle. The other artist is Henry Moore. Aharon Bezalel Israeli Modernist Sculpture 2 Parts Minimalist Aluminum or Steel

By Aharon Bezalel

Located in Surfside, FL

A suite of 2 sculptures. Lovers, man and woman nestled together. sleek minimalist mod sculpture. polished finish on one side. not sure if theese are stell or aluminium. they are cast and signed in Hebrew with initials and numbered 9/9. It is 2 parts that nest together. Aharon Bezalel (born Afghanistan 1926) Born in Afghanistan in 1926 and immigrated to Israel at an early age. As a youth was engaged as a silversmith and craftsman, and was a student of the sculptor Zev Ben-Zvi from whom he absorbed the basic concepts of classic and modernist art and interpreted, according to them, ideas based on ancient Hebrew sources. Aharon Bezalel works and resides in Jerusalem, he taught art for many years. “I saw myself as part of this region. I wanted to find the contact between my art and my surroundings. Those were the first years of Jean Piro’s excavations at the Beer-Sheba mound. They found there, for example, the Canaanite figurines that I especially liked and that were an element that connected me with the past and with this place.” “…a seed and sperm or male and female. These continue life. The singular, the individual alone, cannot exist; I learned this from my father who dabbled with the Kabbalah.” (Aharon Bezalel, excerpt from an interview with David Gerstein) “The singular in Aharon Bezalel’s work is always potentially a couple if not a threesome, the one is also the many: when the individual is revealed within the group he will always seek a huddling, a clinging together. The principle of modular construction is required by this perception of unity and multiplicity, as modular construction in his work is an act of conception or defense. Two poles of unity, potentially alone, exist in Aaron Bezalel’s world: From a formal, sculptural sense these are the sphere and pillar, metaphorically these are the female in the final stages of pregnancy and the solitary male individual. Sphere-seed-woman; Pillar-strand-man. The disproportional, small heads in Aharon Bezalel’s figures leave humankind in it’s primal physical capacity. The woman as a pregnancy or hips, the man as an aggressive or defensive force, the elongated chest serves as a phallus and weapon simultaneously. (Gideon Ofrat) EIN HAROD About the Museum's Holdings: Israeli art is represented by the works of Reuven Rubin, Zaritzky, Nahum Gutman, Mordechai Ardon, Aharon Kahana, Arie Lubin, Yehiel Shemi...

The Pleiades-Taygete 1/8 - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette

By Richard Tosczak

Located in Bloomfield, ON

The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology. She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Edition one of eight. “What inspires/informs my work? In a word, observation. I notice things…a gesture…an accident.” Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
