About the Artist
Artist Doug Cosbie presents the vibrancy found in nature with his impressionist, rural architecture centered artwork. Longing to create something that connects with people, Cosbie spent countless years perfecting how he portrays the world on canvas. Within his journey, he studied as an apprentice in the studios of Sam Black and Jack Shadbolt. As a plein air artist, Doug's studio is a portable pochade box. He begins by finding a location that speaks to him, makes a sketch, and continues to add depth and dimension with oil on canvas. "Creativity when making art is not about interpreting exactly as you see it. New ideas are formed by interesting contrasts, and interesting paintings happen when things are out of place." In the rare cases when he is not painting, you can find him reading, traveling, sailing, and spending quality time with his family. Cosbie's creations have been showcased at galleries in Canada. He is an alumnus of Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Doug says of this pastoral American landscape, "On Highway 2 along the Androscoggin River in Maine is the village of Rumford Center, where there is a small United Church. Its simple design and white facade are an iconic symbol of 19th century America. The church hasn't changed over the years, but the surroundings have. This painting is how I perceive the church and things were back in the simpler times when agriculture was the primary livelihood of its parishioners."

In broad expressive strokes, artist Doug Cosbie features a rustic barn in lush countryside scenery. He displays the charm of pastoral Pennsylvania in a charming ode to American regionalism. "Many old farms still have wooden frames, with a loft for hay and the main floor for milking," says Doug. The traditional timbered architecture retains its charm and stands beautifully around the carpeted fields of verdant herbage.

This work is from Doug's painting trip to Bodie, California. He worked to show the rolling clouds, late day shadows and burnished color emblematic of the arid, hot day. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. He says he loves working outdoors, where all of his senses are engaged. "It is a very creative environment, as you have to work quickly as nature changes," Doug explains. "I ignore what I don't want so the confusion of shapes and colors are reduced to the essentials. The key is to modify or even eliminate objects, as it's rare you will ever find ready-made compositions."

"Eldon is the stereotype of a small Iowa town and a simpler time," shares artist Doug Cosbie. On the outskirts, the viewer encounters a large open field and their first glimpse of one of America's most iconic buildings—the Gothic house. Doug features the classic architecture of the rustic design with its distinctive upper window. He presents an ode to the 1930 Grant Wood's piece, generally considered his most famous work and among the most recognized paintings in twentieth-century American art.

Old farm buildings near Virginia's Shenandoah National Park on a hot, humid September day. The colorful landscape and sky made with deliberate impressionist brushwork bring this simple moment to life. Part of Doug's signature series of plein air paintings, capturing the character and enduring beauty of the rural American landscape. He says he loves working outdoors, where all of his senses are engaged. "It is a very creative environment, as you have to work quickly as nature changes," Doug explains. "Creativity when making art is not about interpreting exactly what you see it. New ideas are formed by interesting contrasts, and interesting paintings happen when things are out of place. I paint the dark shadows boldly, the light with minimal use of white. My sky is not always blue, and the grass not always green, as long as it captures the essence."
