Ernie Barnes was an American painter whose artwork reflected African-American lifestyles. As a skilled athlete in numerous sports during his early years of age, Barnes went on to play professional football, and after a five year career, he decided to retire from the sport and paint full-time. It is apparent in his work that he was searching for the perfect medium between racial and ethnic harmony, and many of his paintings reflect it. Barnes continues today to be one of the most widely collected African-American painters of his time.

Biography:
Thomas McKnight (born 1941) is a U.S. artist. He was born in 1941 in Lawrence, Kansas. He attended Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut, where he was one of only five art majors. He spent his junior year in Paris. After a year of graduate work in art history at Columbia University, in 1964 McKnight found a job at Time Magazine where he would work for eight years, interrupted by a two-year stint in the U. S. Army in South Korea. In 1972 McKnight left Time, summered on the Greek island of Mykonos, and commenced painting in earnest. In 1979 in Mykonos, McKnight met Renate, a vacationing Austrian student, and married the following year. Throughout the 1980s McKnight’s art, mainly limited edition serigraph prints, became increasingly popular. This artwork titled "II Cup of Joe" c.1990, is an original color serigraph by American artist Rickey Jewell Hohimer, 1946-2021. It is hand signed, titled and numbered 250/300 in pencil by the artist. Although formally trained with a MFA in painting, Rickey Jewell Hohimer has used the styles of Van Gogh and Gaughin to reach for the spontaneity and simplicity of today's folk art. Hohimer creates figures which are not photos of reality; they are romantically stylized to encourage straightforward emotional responses both to the colorful images and to the situations in which they find themselves. Each of Hohimer's paintings lays out a basic story line to which viewers add their own details. "I want the viewer to become personally involved. My paintings offer a change from those which encourage extensive intellectualizing about what the artist is trying to convey. I want viewers to smile -- to enjoy the whimsical nature of what they are experiencing -- to feel it, not to analyze it!. This bold Howard Hodgkin print layers five shades of black, with a wide variety of marks including some from the artist’s fingerprints and hand. Scribbles and lines of grey loosely define what could be an interior space with furniture. As is typical of his prints, there is a sense of space, and of the passage of time, expressed through shapes that seem to recede through the picture, deep black shades and, unusually for Hodgkin’s work, the white of the paper showing through. The last photograph displays these rich surface textures on the sheet at an angle.

Barnes did sign examples from an extended run of this poster in black marker for guests at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, however there is only one official limited edition run of 300 in pencil as offered here.
The Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee named Barnes Sports Artist of the 1984 Olympic Games. LAOOC President Peter V. Ueberroth said Barnes and his art “captured the essence of the Olympics” and “portray the city’s ethnic diversity, the power and emotion of sports competition, the singleness of purpose and hopes that go into the making of athletes the world over.” Barnes was commissioned to create five Olympic-themed paintings and serve as an official Olympic spokesman to encourage inner city youth. Specific sports served as central themes in four of the posters, with community involvement the theme of the fifth poster. The posters were entitled: "The Rhythmic Gymnast" (Gymnastics), "The Finish" (Track and Field), "One-on-One" (Basketball), "Winning" (Boxing) and "The Neighborhood Games". This example here, "One-on-One" depicting two basketball players is arguably the most desirable of the five.

This scene depicts a young man playing basketball in Durham, North Carolina where Barnes was born and spent his childhood, however it is unknown if he is the figure in the image. This print reproduces an acrylic painting on canvas by Barnes from about 1970 bearing the same title, "In the Beginning". This work is one of the artist's best known paintings and an iconic basketball image. In a rural country yard, a tall, lanky adolescent throws a ball toward the make-shift hoop, dedicated to practicing his skills. The original painting is in the permanent collection of the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, UT.
