Etienne Ret
French, 1900-1996
Etienne Ret: Born in France, Etienne (Perret) Ret studied art in Paris at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, under Maurice Denis and G. Desvaileres. He first exhibited his original paintings, etchings and lithographs with the Societe des Independants, in Paris, and throughout France. Etienne Ret moved to the United States shortly before the outbreak of World War II and initially settled in San Antonio, Texas. He resided there during the 1940's and established his reputation as a leading artist. Etienne Ret was also a member of the San Antonio Art League and taught painting and printmaking techniques at the San Antonio Museum. Stephanie dates from this period of his career. Around 1950 Etienne Ret moved to Los Angeles where he continued to show his art in major national exhibitions. Etienne Ret's art centered primarily upon figure studies, particularly those of children and women. Today the paintings, lithographs and etchings of Etienne Ret are included in the permanent collections of the State Museum, France, the Encyclopedia Britannica Collection, London, the Witte memorial Museum, San Antonio, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Pasadena Art Institute, San Diego Fine Arts Society and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.to

Traditional Japanese Woodblock Print by Nishijima Katsuyuki
Located in Weesp, NL
Nishijima Katsuyuki (西島 勝之) is a contemporary Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints, which often depict traditional Japanese architecture and landscapes. Born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, Nishijima studied at the Kyoto Prefecture Art School and began his career as a painter before transitioning to woodblock printing. His works are celebrated for their detailed and vibrant representation of the Japanese countryside and urban scenes.
Nishijima's prints are recognized for their use of bold colors and intricate details. He employs traditional woodblock printing techniques, which involve carving the image into woodblocks, inking the blocks, and then pressing them onto paper. Each color in the print requires a separate block and precise alignment, or registration, to create the final image.
The print's title is "Bunraku" and is one of Nishijima's works that showcase traditional Japanese buildings and scenes. The print features a detailed depiction of a traditional Japanese storefront with a noren...
