Henri Matisse Furniture

French, 1869-1954

Whether working as a draftsman, a sculptor, a printmaker or a painter, Henri Matisse was a master of color. Although classically trained at the Académie Julian, in Paris, he quickly abandoned traditional techniques and genres to pioneer a style all his own, marked by quick, gestural strokes and fluid contours.

Along with fellow painter André Derain, Matisse was the leading proponent of Fauvism, a movement whose name is derived from the French word for "wild beast.” Marked by vibrant hues, Fauvist paintings like Matisse’s famous 1906 composition Le Bonheur de vivre use wild, active brushstrokes and a palette unconstrained by nature, resulting in women with purple skin and trees with orange leaves. Often, these compositions unite pure color with the white of exposed canvas to create a sense of transparency and light.

In addition to masterful landscapes and still lifes, Matisse loved to paint erotic subjects, particularly the female nude. Rejecting strict realism, he distilled the form into its essential parts and then translated these into voluptuous, rounded contours. With its striking colors and sculptural modeling of the figure, Odalisque couchée aux magnolias is among Matisse’s most famous works — and the most expensive work of his ever sold — depicting Henriette Darricarrère, his muse and favorite model for around seven years, lounging luxuriously in his Nice studio. In pictures like the lithograph Nu Bleu, he explored the expressive power of a body in motion by placing his figures in twisted or contorted poses, transforming their limbs into tangles of color and shape that push figure painting toward abstraction.

Kawase Hasui Japanese Woodblock Print Mount Fuji in Moonlight, Kawai Bridge 1947
By Kawase Hasui 1
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful and rich woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. This print titled "Mount Fuji in Moonlight, Kawai Bridge (Tsukiyo no Fuji, Kawaibashi)" was originally published in 1947 and it depicts a man heading home crossing the river on the Kawai bridge as evening descends with the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. This wonderful image is widely considered to be one of Hasui's masterworks - with the rich blue tones of nighttime and the complexly composed placement of Mount Fuji. The woodblock print is signed Hasui and sealed Kawase, published by Watanabe Shozaburo. A rarer and harder-to-find, very coveted image by Hasui. Would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection. Hasui's work can be found in numerous prominent collections/museums including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Harvard Art...

101 Nights 'Juin '50' Lithograph by Henri Matisse, Signed
By Henri Matisse
Located in Pasadena, CA
Here is a beautiful lithograph by one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Henri Matisse. The gorgeous, signed print entitled "101 Nights (Juin '50)" is an exhibition poster created by the artist. In french "Elle vit appaitre le matin..." translates to "she saw the morning coming" at the top of the print. The artwork is typical of Matisse's mature style in its use of forms that appear to be cut-out of paper. Flattened areas of color also mark the artist's technique, which he had developed over the course of many decades. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the most well-known and loved artists of the 20th century. He was most recognized as a painter, but he also worked as a sculptor and printmaker. During the 1920s, Matisse was recognized as a "Fauve" (literally, "wild beast"), a designation for artists of the time who used bright, intense coloring in their paintings. Henri Matisse was a friend, contemporary and artistic rival of Pablo Picasso. Henri Matisse artwork...

Henri Matisse, throughout his decades-long career, had a number of different impacts upon the art world. However, his seminal works in so-called Fauvism (French for ‘wild beast’) set him apart from the start. With strident use of color and seemingly wild brushwork, works from Matisse’s formative periods are among the most highly sought after by collectors. You’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted Matisse pieces from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.

Marked by vibrant hues, Fauvist paintings like Matisse's famous 1906 composition Le Bonheur de Vivre use wild, active brushstrokes and a palette unconstrained by nature, resulting in women with purple skin and trees with orange leaves.
