Franck Muller

Swiss

Hailed as the “Master of Complications,” watchmaking brand Franck Muller is celebrated for its exquisitely technical contemporary timepieces. Its cofounder — the man for whom the company is named — is known for his groundbreaking use of the tourbillon and for championing intricate mechanical watches in an era that nearly saw them disappear entirely.

Muller crafted his own tourbillon wristwatch in the early 1980s. It was a time when the watch industry was still weathering the so-called “quartz crisis,” when Japanese battery-powered quartz timepieces, which were easy and inexpensive to produce, swept through the marketplace and challenged the traditional mechanical models. While Japanese brands such as Seiko thrived, this meant economic disaster in Switzerland. Now-legendary designers such as Gérald Genta created iconic timepieces during the crisis, but it was unlikely to see such a complicated timepiece from what was even an established luxury watchmaker when Muller’s first handcrafted watches emerged.

The tourbillon was invented in the 18th century, an era of clocks and pocket watches, to battle the negative effects that gravity was having on accuracy of these devices. As a young artisan restoring vintage Patek Philippe watches, Breguet watches and other timepieces that came his way from collectors, the Swiss-born Muller, who dropped out of high school but studied for four years at the Geneva School of Watchmaking, came to admire the sophistication of the tourbillon.

"The tourbillon is very difficult to make and very difficult to associate with other complications, yet it results in a watch with better timing," Muller told Cigar Aficionado.

He decided that he would make his own watches and that a tourbillon should be visible from the front versus the back. No one had ever done that before.

The Franck Muller brand was officially established by Muller and Vartan Sirmakes in 1991 and the tourbillon — even as it requires hand-assembly by seasoned experts — would later be integrated into the faces of many of the watchmaker’s most popular watch designs, including the Franck Muller Yachting series.

Today’s discerning collectors are enthusiastic about these prestigious tourbillon timepieces, the brand’s wildly inventive shaped watches and the World Premieres, in which a new line of timepieces is produced annually and boasts a feature or attribute that is brand-new to the watchmaking industry.

Questions About Franck Muller
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The simplest way to verify whether a Franck Muller watch is authentic is to have an expert verify it. The key sign of an authentic Franck Muller timepiece is the level of quality and attention to detail in the piece. The colors in the dial should be vibrant and the glow-in-the-dark paint marking the face should be bright. Shop a range of expertly vetted Franck Muller watches on 1stDibs.

To spot a fake Franck Muller, first assess the overall quality. Imperfections such as glue marks or unevenness in the finish will usually indicate a fake. The logo on the dial can also be a telltale sign of a fake. Compare the dial of your timepiece to images of authentic dials. With a real Franck Muller, you expect the logo to have a three-dimensional look and a slight shine, characteristics that counterfeiters often fail to duplicate correctly. Model numbers marked on the back of the case are another helpful detail. By entering this number into the official Franck Muller website, you can determine if it matches your timepiece's model. If not, your watch may be a knockoff. If you're still unsure about your watch, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer can be of assistance. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Franck Muller watches.

What the most expensive watch by Franck Muller is will likely change over time as new styles arrive on the market. The 42-millimeter tonneau 18-karat watch is highly complex, with 36 complications and 1,483 components. Explore a variety of Franck Muller watches on 1stDibs.

A Franck Muller watch is expensive for a few reasons. The luxury watchmaker produces its movements in-house, adding many complications to its watches. As a result, producing them is labor-intensive and requires the work of skilled artisans. In addition, the maker incorporates costly materials, such as 18-karat gold, platinum and sapphire glass, into its designs. Also, many of Franck Muller's models are limited edition, meaning there is a very limited supply compared to the demand. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Franck Muller watches.

No one knows for sure how much CR7's Franck Muller watch was. However, experts estimate that the Cintree Curvex Tourbillon, with its baguette diamonds and white gold case, likely cost around $1.1 million. Cristiano Ronaldo is an avid collector of watches and famously owns several more timepieces valued at $1 million or more, including a Girard-Perregaux Planetarium Tri-Axia, an Imperial Tourbillon Invisible set with baguette diamonds and a Jacob & Co.
