A pair of large and evocatively enigmatic 1980 abstract expressionist acrylic paintings on canvas by K. M. Galloway, presented as a thematic diptych that calls to mind austerely surreal sci-fi and fantasy cover art of the ‘70s and early ‘80s. Work at left suggests a pale mint green body of water meeting a sandy shore, upon which looms a geometrically improbable multiplanar monolith. Within this imposing portal floats a deceptively complex abstract-cubist organic form rendered in rust-colored impasto with translucent glass-like details. Work at right distinguished by a towering quasi-heroic figure on a pedestal of stacked blocks, its body and cape or wings given substance by impasto in shades of blue and brown. It stands against a pale mint blue sky and looks down upon a light sand-colored expanse—echoing elements of the work at left—with a ghostly moon hanging overhead. Both works display impressive technical skill and mastery of medium throughout, with razor-sharp lines, cleanly done color fields, very subtle gradients, and judicious use of impasto all combining to striking effect. Almost imperceptible tonal variations between the pair shift beautifully with the light. Work at right is signed “K. Galloway” at bottom right, and signed and dated “K. M. Galloway Mar 15/80” on verso at top. On verso at bottom is the label for since-closed high-end Haight-Ashbury concert poster & frame shop Off the Wall. Work at left is unsigned. Presented in their original custom teal enameled metal frames. An exceedingly rare Mel abitz designed two-piece Sectional Sofa for Galloway Furniture. This one owner sofa came from a Tampa estate and was refinished in a high end light blue wool fabric (Bernhardt Mix).
