Georges D'Espagnat Figurative Paintings
French, 1870-1950
Georges d’Espagnat was born in 1870 in Melun, France. He was a painter, muralist, illustrator and theater designer. His family moved to Paris in the 1880s and at the age of 18 he declined the academic training of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and chose instead to independently study the works of the Old Masters in the Louvre and attend classes at the free academy.
In 1891 d’Espagnat began exhibiting at the Salon des Refusees and in the following year exhibited four paintings at the Salon des Independants. He later exhibited at the Salon of the Societe Nationale as well. Although associated with many of the greatest names in 20th century art, and though his work has at various times been identified as Fauve, Nabis or Impressionist, he retained his own individuality. He was influential in the art circles of his time with the likes of Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, Pissarro and Chagall. d’Espagnat also became closely acquainted with many of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including Renoir, Vuillard, Andre, Bonnard and Denis. In 1895 he had his first solo show in Paris and three years later a show at Durand-Ruel Gallery. He was part of a group exhibition in 1907 at the Marcel Bernheim Gallery along with Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse, Pissarro, Rouault, Suerat and Toulouse-Lautrec while in 1926 his works were a part of another exhibition at the same gallery along with Andre, Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso and Signac.
In 1903 d’Espagnat was one of the founding members of the Salon d’Automne and, a year later, became the vice president. In 1906 he collaborated on the illustrations for Remy de Gourmont’s Sixtine, and later worked with Alphonse Daudet on his book, L’Immortel. Traveling extensively throughout his lifetime, D’Espagnat visited Britain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and Spain.
His work can be found in many museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Musee Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute, Chicago; the Pushkin Museum, Moscow and the Musee d’Orsay.to

From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style.
D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Among other exhibitions were 1912, A Century of French Art ( Centenaire de l'art français), St Petersburg; 1916, Kunstverein, Winterthur; 1918, 1926, Galerie M. Bertheim, Paris; 1930, Contemporary French Art...

Sitges Spain oil on canvas painting mediterranean art spanish seascape
By Rafael Durancamps
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Sitges
Artist: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979)
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm (14.96 x 24.01 in)
Support: Canvas stretched over wooden stretcher
Framing: Unframed
Signature: Signed lower left: Durancamps
Period: 1960s (estimated based on style, technique, and materials)
Work Description
The painting Sitges depicts an evocative scene of the iconic Catalan coastal town. At the center stands the unmistakable silhouette of the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, surrounded by cascading white houses that descend toward the shore. A solitary fisherman in the foreground casts his rod from the sand, adding a human and melancholic dimension to the landscape.
The composition reflects Rafael Durancamps’s mastery in atmospheric construction: the balance between sky, architecture, and figure is achieved through loose yet controlled brushstrokes, and a sober palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, blues, and greys. The scene conveys stillness, everyday life, and a sense of belonging to the landscape—recurring qualities in the artist’s work.
Artist Biography: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979)
Born in Sabadell, Rafael Durancamps was one of the leading Catalan figurative painters of the 20th century. Initially trained under Joan Vila Cinca and a friend of Joaquim Mir, he chose a personal path that distanced him from avant-garde movements. In 1926, he moved to Paris, where he founded La Fenêtre Ouverte gallery, bringing together artists such as Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.
After permanently returning to Barcelona in 1939, he exhibited regularly at Sala Parés and established a distinctive style rooted in lyrical light, intimate observation of everyday life, and a refined technique—particularly in still lifes, landscapes, and solitary figures.
His work is held in major collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Montserrat Museum, the Sabadell Art Museum, and the BBVA Collection.

La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
By Georges d'Espagnat
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work.
Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...
