This is due to the fact that this delicate material obviously lends itself very well to the artist's characteristic vaporous style and manner. We should also note the great modernity of this landscape and its fades, which go almost as far as abstraction. Henry Ottmann was born on 10 April 1877 in Ancenis. He made his debut at the Salon La Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and took part in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. In 1911 and 1912, Ottmann exhibited at the Artistes de la Société Moderne at the Gallery Paul Durand-Ruel together with Armand Guillaumin, Henri Lebasque and others. Karl Alexander Gerich (English, 23.4.1956 - 4.1.2016) Pollonaise No. 24, 1988 - Etching - Sheet ca. 27.8 X 42 cm - No plate mark - Varnished ('Glossy Antique French') Finished, coloured, backed and varnished print likely to be a spare sheet (over production), which were never used. Possibly at some later stage, Karl experimented by partially painting the back with divering number of layers of pink. Held up as finished cards the pink would then shine through the varnished card. By holding up the sheet, this effect can be observed in areas with and without the pink backing. Sheets is in good condition and suitable to be framed. Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know. He could do it all: Come up with the tale, weave meaning(s) into it, fill it with spirited characters of his liking, draw it, etch it, print it, colour it and handcraft the inks, paper and card into wondersome packs of playing cards, each of them living in their own, most exquisitely crafted boxes. Every pack a magical marvel, filled with the spirit of this genius card maker … All this he did using his Adana printing press, very simple hand tools and great skill. When Karl closed down his studio in St.Peter’s Terrace in Bath, England and moved to Poplar Close, he sold off work for which he felt he no longer wanted to be the custodian. LARRY HOROWITZ (American b. 1956) "Purple Mountains," 1988, pastel on paper Hand signed and dated L/R, "Horowitz '88," Dimensions sight 19 1/2" x 23", framed, 26 1/2" x 30 1/2". Larry Horowitz is an American landscape painter. He was born in 1956 in New York City and graduated from SUNY Purchase and immediately won the prestigious and coveted position as apprentice to Wolf Kahn. Horowitz's work captures the beauty of the American landscape with expert use of texture and color that invites imagination and discovery. Although he paints en plein air, he has a firm grounding in abstract expressionism through his education with former students from the Bauhaus and Hans Hofmann school. He has combined both points of view to develop his unique language. His work follows in the tradition of great Modernist American landscape painters Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keefe and Charles Burchfield but with a more modern, Fauvist color palette. He was included in the show "In the Country, By the Sea" at Madelyn Jordan Gallery along with David Kimball Anderson, Stanley Boxer, Byron Browne, Derek Buckner, Richard Diebenkorn, Larry Kelsey, Gary Komarin, and Susan Wides. Horowitz has also shown at Images Gallery along with Gary Bukovnik, Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Horowitz, Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, Don Nice, Philip Pearlstein, Joseph Raffael, Hunt Slonem, Carol Summers and Neil Welliver. Horowitz has exhibited extensively both in the US and Canada and is included in numerous private, corporate and public collections.
