Geskel Saloman Paintings
Swedish, 1821-1902
Though born in Denmark, Geskel Saloman trained with Johan Ludwig Lund at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts where he was awarded a medal in 1846. From 1850 his reputation grew rapidly to the point where he became one of the most popular portrait and genre scene painters in Sweden.
Saloman exhibited widely in Scandinavia and abroad, and from 1854 he lived and worked in Paris where he studied with Thomas Couture (1815-1879). In the following year, the painting being offered for sale here was given an honourable mention at the Salon de Paris. Between 1860 and 1863 Saloman’s preoccupation with Orientalism lead him to travel to North Africa where he lived in the city of Algiers.
In the 1870s Saloman taught at the Gothenburg Academy of Arts, became a professor of the Stockholm Academy and official portrait painter to the Swedish Royal Family.(Biography provided by Academy Fine Paintings)
