This elegant original poster reproduces the celebrated 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild label, created by the renowned Swiss artist Hans Erni for one of Bordeaux's most prestigious First Growth estates. Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has invited leading international artists to create original artworks for each vintage label, establishing one of the most remarkable collaborations between the worlds of fine art and fine wine. Contributors to this legendary series include artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, and Keith Haring. For the 1987 vintage, the commission was entrusted to Hans Erni (1909–2015), one of Switzerland's most celebrated twentieth-century artists. Known for his refined line work and humanist vision, Erni created a composition centered around the portrait of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, framed by stylized vines and clusters of grapes symbolizing the vineyard that he transformed into an international icon. The vintage holds exceptional historical significance within the history of the estate. The label bears the moving dedication written by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild: "À mon père, le Baron Philippe de Rothschild, rénovateur de Mouton, je dédie ce millésime de sa 65ème et dernière vendange." The inscription commemorates the 65th and final harvest overseen by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who passed away in 1988 after more than six decades guiding the destiny of Mouton Rothschild and elevating the château to its legendary status within the world of wine. Another phrase appears beneath the dedication: "Mouton ne change." This echoes the estate's famous motto, coined after Mouton Rothschild finally obtained First Growth status in the Bordeaux Classification revision of 1973: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change." (First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.) The poster therefore represents far more than a wine advertisement; it stands as a tribute to one of the most influential figures in modern Bordeaux history and marks the transition from Baron Philippe de Rothschild to his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who would continue the family's stewardship of the estate for decades to come.
