Harland Miller Art

British, b. 1972

Harland Miller is a British artist and novelist, born in 1964, in Yorkshire, England. He is best known for his satirical paintings of re-imagined Penguin classics, often with his invented sardonic titles. He takes artistic influence from Ed Ruscha, Anselm Kiefer and Robert Rauschenberg and cites Mark Rothko as one of his favorite artists. He attended the Chelsea College of Art, in London, from where he received his BA and MA degrees, after which he traveled extensively, living in New York, New Orleans, Paris and Berlin. Miller first achieved critical acclaim with his writing. His debut novel, Slow down Arthur, Stick to Thirty (2000), featured a kid who travels around northern England, with a David Bowie impersonator. In the same year, Miller published the novella, First I was Afraid, I was Petrified, based on the true story of a female relative with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. In 2001, Miller produced the first of a series of paintings, based on the dust jackets of old Penguin books. He was struck by the visceral nostalgia that the book covers, rather than their contents, evoked.

"Postcard from Paris" 1970s Satirical Lithograph

By Charles Bragg

Located in Soquel, CA

"Postcard from Paris" Satirical Lithograph Humorous Screen Print by Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017). Two nude individuals pose in a room partially covered by a piece of drapery and a flower vase. The woman wears a variety of costume jewelry and a crown and appears posed, while the man stands behind an old-fashioned camera and smiles. The surroundings are highly colorful, with pink wallpaper, blue curtains, and a variety of different plants. Both figures look towards the viewer, potentially nodding to the satirical nature of the piece. Numbered as "Artists Proof IX" in bottom left corner. Signed "Charles Bragg" in bottom right corner. Frame size: 20.88" H x 27" W Image size: 10.25" H x 17" W Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017) was a painter, sculptor, and illustrator of commentary on human behavior, based out of Los Angeles, California. Bragg often injected his sense of humor and appreciation of satire into his subjects, many of which are cartoonish and seem half human and half animal. He also depicted serious subjects, ones that become poignant commentaries on the human condition. Bragg was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1931. His parents were vaudeville performers, and he spent most of his young life traveling on tour with them. During his teenage years, he went to New York's High School of Music & Art in Harlem. At 18, he ran away with his high school sweetheart, fellow artist Jennie Tomao...

Todros Geller (1889 – 1949) was a Jewish American artist and teacher best known as a master printmaker and a leading artist among Chicago’s art community.Geller was born in Vinnytsia, the Russian Empire (now Ukraine) in 1889.[2] He studied art in Odessa and continued his studies after moving to Montreal in 1906 where he immigrated to Canada. He married and moved to Chicago in 1918, where he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago until 1923. Geller produced paintings, woodcuts, woodcarvings, and etchings. His work focused on Jewish tradition, often including moralistic themes and social commentary, shtetl, ghetto life, and the intersection of Jewish tradition with modern-day Chicago. He regarded art as a tool for social reform and he spent a large part of his career teaching art. His work was commissioned for stained glass windows, bookplates, community centers and Yiddish and English books. He was regarded as a leader in the field of synagogue and religious art. He designed stained glass window for synagogues in Omaha, Fort Worth, Dayton, Stamford, and Chicago Heights. Over the course of his career he illustrated more than 40 books. In addition to conducting classes in his studio, Geller was head of art at the Jewish People’s Institute (JPI), supervisor of art for the Board of Jewish Education and director of art for the College of Jewish Studies (which became the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership) and taught at Hull House. Many prominent Chicago artists studied drawing and painting under Geller. Geller was a source of inspiration to Aaron Bohrod and Mitchell Siporin, among others. Irene Gordon was also among his pupils. In 1926, Geller formed what would become a lengthy working relationship with Chicago publisher and cultural activist L. M. Shteyn (a pseudonym for Yitshak Leyb Fradkin, anglicized as L.M. Stein in his English language correspondence). Shteyn and Geller shared a similar ideology, were both considered radical progressives, were part of the Chicago Jewish Left who worked to promote the Yiddish language and they both supported the Soviet Union for its commitment to the Yiddish language and to the Jewish settlement in Birobidzhan. Shteyn's Yiddish press, the L. M. Shteyn Farlag, published at least eight monographs illustrated by Geller and four art albums dedicated to his work. Geller was one of the founding members of "Around the Palette" in Chicago in 1926, a club where artists shared their personal views of art and its role in society. The club became the "American Jewish Art Club", in 1940 and subsequently the "American Jewish Artists Club" in the early 1990s. Other founding members included Emil Armin, David Bekker, Aaron Bohrod, Fritzi Brod...

Harland Miller, 'Narcissist Seeks Similar' Penguin, Etching, 2021

By Harland Miller

Located in New York, NY

The 'Narcissist Seeks Similar' limited edition etching boasts energizing fuchsias with complementary pop art colors, subtle textures, and iconic motif by artist and writer Harland Miller. Created in 2021 with multiple layers of etching and relief printing, each penguin in the edition of only 50 is hand-finished. Miller connects Pop Art, Abstraction, and Figurative Painting with his love of text, as the Penguin Book dust jacket paintings first appeared in 2001 and are inspired by the books from the 1950’s and 60’s. His satirical re-imagining of the titles while timeless, are perhaps particularly relevant in today’s world. The idea to create the limited edition series was from an enormously popular recent painting of the same title, from Miller’s ‘Penguin’ series, which was first exhibited at the artist’s largest solo exhibition in his hometown of York in the UK. Miller commented on the work, “This title came from a series called ‘Circling The Small Ads’. At the risk of over explaining this – because I’m going back a ways, these were quite literally small ads usually placed in local newspapers by people looking for some form, (often a very specific form), of companionship. My eye was always drawn to the way they were composed, with the seeker – whoever they may be – describing themselves in two or three carefully considered words, underneath which – centered and occupying its own line – was the word ’Seeks’, and then of course below that was a brief description of what, or whom they were seeking. Desire was the activating sort of impulse behind these ads and I wanted that to come out in the painting itself: the way it was painted and the colour. I mean, colour changes the way in which you will read something. This kind of cerise pink I used (which according to Penguin’s colour-key, denoted the series on travel and adventure) is a colour that elicits a really strong response – it’s very immediate – like some primal flame being turned up inside. The colour itself was important because the narcissist had to be about desire – right, and of course that had to be special, and this is a ‘Penguin Special’ – the only one of its kind.” The work comes ready to install in a custom frame with museum caliber non-glare UV protective glass and hooks on reverse. Harland Miller is a British artist and author who is best known for his large-scale, photo-realistic paintings, posters, and prints of vintage Penguin book covers. A critically acclaimed novelist as well as an influential painter, his practice explores the combination of image and text, similar in scope to American artists Ed Ruscha and Mel Bochner. “There's always been this compulsion to write on pictures,” he has observed.
