Harold Speed Paintings

British, 1872-1958

Harold Speed was an English painter in oil and watercolor of portraits, figures and historical subjects. Born in London, the son of Edward Speed, an architect, he studied architecture at the Royal College of Art, but soon took up painting. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy Schools between 1891 and 1896, winning a gold medal and a traveling scholarship in 1893. In 1896, he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893 and held his first one-man exhibition in 1907 at the Leicester Galleries. In 1930, Speed provided paintings for the new chapel of Wesley House, Cambridge. Speed lived in Watlington, Oxfordshire and London, where he died on 20 March, 1957. Because of their intelligent combination of useful advice and sensitive reflection on the nature and meaning of artistic practice, Speed's instructional manuals on drawing and painting have long been considered valuable resources for artists. There are editions of his manual The Practice and Science of Drawing (1913) in the public domain.

As a child, I sought peace and quiet through mind-absorbing hands-on work and found that I loved brilliant colorful creations. At Christmas, around the age of 9 or 10, I received a "paint-by-numbers" set. Wow!! How I loved it! Quickly, I painted the two art panels that were included and afterward, I used the leftover paint on pieces of cardboard creating paintings of my own design. Since money was very tight, I was not afforded any further painting supplies and eventually purchased my own as a grown-up. Little-by-little, I taught myself to paint in oils as well as acrylics; although they were really not very good, I persisted eventually ready to learn watercolor. I took lessons from two very fine watercolorists, Warren Hunter...

"South Ferry from Shelter Island" Oil painting realist seascape, signed, framed

By Angel Ramiro Sanchez

Located in Sag Harbor, NY

Painted from life in 2016 by Angel Ramiro Sanchez; a subtle and colorful seascape. The South Ferry runs across the Peconic Bay, from North Haven, Sag Harbor, to Shelter Island. A humble spot in New York's famous summertime destination, The Hamptons. Signed: "Angel Ramiro Sanchez" on lower left, recto & again on verso. Framed in a simple black frame with gold inner lip. Frame has a couple small scuffs. Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program. Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story. Ramiros work is predominantly represented by th e Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, but also Scriba Gallery, venice, Italy, Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Tx. Ramiros works can be found in numerous private collections in Europe, The United States and South America. Public collections include: The Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy. The Fremantle Foundation for Foreing Artist in Tuscany at Villa Peyron, Florence, Italy and The Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. USA. He shares his life and passion for art with his wife, the artist Melissa Franklin-Sanchez. Education 1993-1997 Florence Academy of Art, directed by Daniel Graves, Florence, Italy. 1993-1997 Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze Graduated Magna Cum Laude, Thesis: Historic and Technical Notes of Academic Realism Today. 1995 Florence, Italy: Michael John Angel...
