Harold Town Art

Canadian, 1924-1990

Harold Town remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the Painters Eleven group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists, who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, his first significant body of work, which established his reputation as a group of monotypes - which he called Single Autographic Prints. Town was introduced to lithography by fellow painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen. The Single Autographic Prints were first exhibited in 1954. Two years later the National Gallery of Canada would successfully nominate him to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale. By the end of the decade, Town received international accolades for these works and had become one of the most admired artists in Canada. This complex mauve-hued example of a Single Autographic Print is Harold Town at his best; layered, rich colors creating a hypnotic inimitable abstract surface. This type of SAP is particularly sought-after as it is one of the earliest and features a distinct graphic collage-like composition made up of blocky shapes. Such elements would become signatures in Town's oeuvre. An essential work for any collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.

Large Ink Drawing Abstract Expressionist Rooster Woman Artist

Judith Brown (December 17, 1931 – May 11, 1992) was a dancer and a sculptor who was drawn to images of the body in motion and its effect on the cloth surrounding it. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. This is done in a style similar to Leonard Baskin. Rudolph Valentino
By Harold Town
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the best-known and most intriguing artists from the "Painters Eleven" group. Town's reputation was established in the late 1950s with a series of unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included elements of collage. In 1956, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale with these works. Over the course of the following decades, the artist continued to reinvent his aesthetic, regularly changing medium and mood. This work is a superlative example of Town’s fascination with the cinema and Hollywood characters. This exploration culminated in 1971 with the drawing collection, “Silent Stars, Sound Stars, Film Stars,” which examined onscreen personas of popular Hollywood characters. The collection includes three iterations of this drawing, each capturing the actor's alluring charm. Printmaking is an essential element of Harold Town's reputation. Throughout his lengthy career, he completed significant and memorable bodies of work as a printmaker. His portraits of celebrated icons, such as Rudolph Valentino...

Harold Town "Babe Ruth"
By Harold Town
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Harold Town (1924–1990) was one of the most dynamic and brilliant figures in Canadian art throughout his lengthy career. While often associated with Painters Eleven, he was also a master printmaker. In every decade of his career he experimented with printmaking to create significant and memorable bodies of work. In the 1960's star worship experienced never before levels of hysteria. From teenagers to downtown artists, fame and star worship defined this remarkable decade. While not necessarily associated with Pop Art, Harold Town explored the famous in a series of drawings and lithographic prints, “Popsters and Celebrities” primarily completed in 1969 to 1971. Babe Bruth was one of the most famous American baseball players and was active for a remarkably long period; 1914 through 1935. Ruth's legendary power and charismatic personality made him the target of intense press and public attention. This work is a fine example from this timeless and chic series and as is another reminder of how Town was an exceptional draftsman. Take a look at some of the other examples from the "Superstar" series, including Yoko Ono, Charlie Chaplin and Gracie Slick. Questions about this piece? Contact us. "Babe Ruth...
