Harry Anderson Figurative Paintings

American, 1906-1996

Harry Anderson was a Scottish artist born in Fife. He as a pupil and life long friend of Charles Pulsford RS. He attended Edinburgh College of Art in the early 50s under Pulsford, where he met his wife Sally. They then moved to London briefly in 1954 and then to Harlow, in 1960. Anderson lived and worked in Harlow for the last 40 years of his life with a studio at Parndon Mill. He died in the summer of 2002 with an unfinished painting still wet on his easel. Contemporaries of Harry Anderson considered him a significant British artist of that generation, an early exponent of abstract expressionism, producing energetic, organic abstracts based on observation of his environment. Anderson regularly exhibited at the Gibberd Gallery in Harlow. “The most important exhibition of modern art in Edinburgh for the last 20 years,” said Sir Richard Demarco in opening the retrospective exhibition of Harry Anderson at the Randolph Gallery in Dundas Street, Edinburgh, January 2007.

Only Ballantine Ale Brews "Brewer's Gold," ad illustration appeared in the major magazines of the day. A magic moment is caught at a peak point of drama. It's the instant of friends having fun. A cold beer from the fridge is offered and it's is acknowledged with a head nod. The woman in the foreground covers her giggling face reacting to a funny comment. The decisive moment is preserved. Sounds like a critique of an art photograph? No, it's an illustrator. This ingenious Infiniti "S" composition simultaneously represents the best of photography and painting. Cartier-Bresson could have captured the precise moment. While Nicolas Poussin could have rendered the complex figural composition. Add to it , a painting technique and color scheme with the quick drama of a post-impressionist. We have a great work of art by an overlooked American illustrator/artist/painter, Mike Ludlow...

Highly detailed landscape with a house and car by Edward K. Williams (American, 1870-1950). A large house sits atop a hill, looking down over a road that runs along the river. Three people are driving a car from the 1930s along the road. The scene is rendered with great detail - both the house and the car are very accurate. There is an ornate border around the piece that was not finished, including instructions for framing and matting. Signed "E K Williams" on verso, with an address. Presented in a giltwood frame with a new off-white mat. Frame size: 15.75"H x 12.75"W Image size: 7.75"H x 6.5"W Landscape painter, Edward K. Williams was born 1870 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Williams studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with Freer, Vanderpoel, Fursman, and Krehbiel. He exhibited there as well from 1903-1929 (including many winter scenes).
