Helen Ray Harris was born in England. She received her initial art training in her native England and immigrated to the United States at age 19. Before she arrived in the USA and shortly afterward, she worked repairing and restoring antique furniture. Harris worked for the Prudential Insurance Company for most of her career, while pursuing her part-time art endeavors. Upon her retirement, and after moving to the Monterey Peninsula, she pursued her art career on a full-time basis. Primarily, a self-taught artist, she painted in watercolors, acrylics and mixed media. She is known for her landscape depictions of the Monterey Peninsula. Harris did spend time studying with renowned Monterey area artists Elizabeth Palmer, Mary Titus and Joseph Nordmann. She was a long time member of the Artists Equity and the Central Coast Art Association. She exhibited frequently in both of those venues. Harris was a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Coast Art Association for over 10 years. She exhibited at the Venture Gallery in Monterey, the Vest Pocket Gallery in Pacific Grove and the Fort Ord Gallery at Fort Ord. Her works are in collections worldwide. At the time of her death in 2001, Harris resided in Carmel, California.
