Falling Leaves
By Ira Barkoff
Located in Greenwich, CT
Born in 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, Ira Barkoff’s paintings feature empty, Zen-like landscapes whose stillness reflects a location’s essence. Barkoff seeks to “portray a sense of vastness” and instill feelings of awe in his viewers, he says. Furthering his exploration of the abstract, Barkoff paints in his studio, rather than en plein air, fabricating landscapes from his visual and emotional memories. The Impressionist-turned-Expressionist painter is inspired by the atmospheric qualities of works by Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner and cites Gerhard Richter as a more contemporary influence. He recently transitioned from using a paintbrush to using a squeegee and palette knives for his work, as the latter allow for greater spontaneity and manipulation of color. He says of his work: “Looking at a blank canvas can be both exciting and frightening at the same time. Most of the time exciting wins out and I plunge in. That is, I paint the landscape, which for me is what it’s all about. The landscape represents nature and contemplating nature is being in touch with God. You could cast me as a modern-day Luminist-Tonalist-Impressionist. Monet’s Water Lilies have been a big influence, along with the landscape painter Wolf Kahn.” “The landscape is what I see before me or from my mind’s eye. When I paint a mountain or a tree, I’m not trying to capture the mountain or tree literally (that’s what a photograph does). I’m trying to express my inner spirit in the painting – to transcend the physical to reach the spiritual.” “My most successful pictures are not those that are the most accurate in terms of nature, but are the ones where the state of my consciousness allowed me to translate my feelings – my deepest inner feelings – to the canvas. When I get into this altered state...

Sailing into the Sun is an abstract landscape painting. It is oil on canvas. It is gallery wrapped so there is no need for a frame. On a summer morning in 1993 a 22 years old young came to Florida from a small old town in the central area of Cuba called Santa Clara. In his bag, he brought no more than two valuable things, his worn-out brushes and a great dream. The dream to one day become a professional artist in this new land that welcomed him with open arms. Captivated by his love for the beauty of the Landscapes, his last works are what he sees even in the most common scenes: the close relationship of life and who we are with the natural world around us that asks us to respect and care for it. Artist Statement: " I like to scrutinize in the simple things, sometimes it is there where the lost painting is waiting to be found by the painter's eyes. The landscape painting gives me the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the natural world and humbly capture on a canvas a little of its beauty listening to its voice that reminds us how valuable we are and how much we should love it". Sotter Oil on artist board 12 x 9 inches Born in Pittsburgh in 1879 to Nicholas and Katherine Sotter, George William Sotter painted the rivers and mills of that city in his early youth. He apprenticed with several stained-glass studios there prior to becoming a partner in the studio of Horace Rudy in Pittsburgh around 1901. He took leave from the studio and came to Bucks County in 1902, to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as with Edward W. Redfield, the premier painter of the New Hope School. In 1903, he participated in the annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the Academy from 1905 – 1907 under William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz. George William Sotter lived in Holicong, Pennsylvania, near New Hope, in a converted 19th Century stone barn.
