The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. Ted Adams’ first solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery juxtaposes surrealism with the documentary art form. What differentiates Mr. Adams’ work from traditional photojournalism is his keen eye for capturing the irony in the events that unfold before our eyes. It is the found objects in everyday life to which Adams is most attuned. He creates a subtle mood and visual mystery that conveys meaning not only from the image itself but also through imagining what exists just beyond the frame. "I see photography as a way of cropping the world—selectively taking things out of context—which often results in stripping the meaning out of the original subject matter, or at least making the image open to interpretation. It’s the opposite of traditional photojournalism whose intention is to create ‘narrative’ and context rather than discard them." While he has exhibited artistic photography in a variety of genres, in the past five years he turned his artistic eye inward to reflect a more autobiographical tone. While some people compare his work to that of Robert Frank, Adams finds himself more and more influenced by Larry Clark whose career was built on pictures drawn from his own life and drug-addled friends rather than a specific documentary mission. The unique presentation of this collection of twenty-three silver gelatin prints enhances the voyeuristic sensibility of Mr. Adams’ work. Each photograph is jewel box in size, measuring 4" x 6" to invite the viewer in to make an intimate appraisal. The craftsmanship of the wide, dark wood frames hearkens back to late 19th-century Shaker design—yet the aesthetic is boldly contemporary, providing a strong backdrop to draw the viewer’s gaze directly to the subject matter. This artisanship extends to the printing where Adams exhibits his skills in traditional darkroom processes. He shoots mostly with Leica and Nikon 35mm film cameras...

JoAnn Callis (1940- American, Contemporary) Baby Color photograph, hand signed in pencil en verso, dated 2000, and numbered 4/200 Upon magnification, it appears to be some kind of digital print, similar to a half-tone, but composed of fine lines rather than dots. It is on heavy wove printmaking paper, the sheet measures 17" x 14". Sight: 6.25" x 6" . Jo Ann Callis (born Cincinnati, Ohio 1940) is an American artist who works with photography and is based in California. Though Callis initially pursued a degree at Ohio State University in 1958, she dropped out in her second year when she got married. She and her husband moved to Southern California in 1961. Her father died after the birth of her first son Stephen in the same year. In 1963, her second son Michael was born. By 23, she was married with two children; she later separated from her husband. Callis enrolled at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1970 initially in graphic design. When she took a course from Robert Heinecken in photography, she was encouraged by Heinecken to explore things within her mind. Both sensual and unsettling, these scenes showcase erotic imagination in its many forms, all intimate and deeply human. Although the work may sound like a very contemporary investigation of desire, it was made some 40 years ago, predating the staged photographs of Cindy Sherman and Gregory Crewdson. In 1975, while still a student at UCLA, a year before finishing her Masters in Fine Arts, she was offered a position to work at California Institute of the Arts (S. CA), where she works up until now (2017). Callis's work is primarily surrealist. Thematically, she has traditionally been invested in drawing attention to and complicating domestic spaces and the role of motherhood. These characteristics are demonstrated in pieces such as Dish Trick (1985) Publications Woman Twirling. Los Angeles, CA: J. Paul Getty Museum, 2009. Text by Judith Keller. Decor. Thistle & Weed, 2013. Essay by Jennifer A. Watts. Other Rooms. New York: Aperture, 2014. Select public collections: Museum Of Modern Art, New York. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles. J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Gallery Min, Japan. References Bohnacker, Siobhan (March 6, 2014). "Jo Ann Callis's Color Work".
