Joe Waano-Gano was born in the US in 1906. He is a native American artist with a prestigious career in California in the 1930s and 1940s. Born a Cherokee Indian (his name means "Bow-Arrow"), Waano-Gano studied with Christian von Schneidau in the 1920s before exhibiting widely in the 1930s and 1940s. Waano-Gano won a series of medals and prizes, painted murals in the Los Angeles General Hospital, and promoted the native art of the American Indian.
