Large, Two-Handled Art Deco Urn with Stylized Leaves, Deep Orange, 1930

About the Item

A marvelous and important example of William Hentschel's artistry at the famed Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, this large, two-handled urn depicts stylized leaf forms in a dark brown glaze on a ground of rusty-orange. Hentschel worked at Rookwood for years, and is famous for his bold Art Deco leaf forms, in this case with glazes that drip sensuously down the body of the urn. Sometime after 1940, Hentschel left Rookwood to join the Kenton Hills Porcelains firm, located in Erlanger, Kentucky across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The interior of the urn is glazed in a soft chartreuse color. The bottom of the urn shows the Rookwood mark and the date.
