Josep Moscardo Art

Spanish, b. 1953
Barcelona, 1953 Painter, sculptor and draftsman of deep-rooted post-impressionist tradition among the most colorful exponents of the moment: Mir, Amat, Sanvisens ..., who from an easy, spontaneous and refined brushstroke, often portrays marinas or landscapes of Catalonia, the Balearics, Paris and several countries of Europe and the USA. Along with these scenographies and panoramas of considerable magnitude, he concocted interior themes, coffee scenes and figure studies, subjects in which he exercised his calligraphic faculties and an ingenious dexterity for drawing. Since 1982, he began to experience the volume of iron, achieving vital and original results that predict a potential approach to this three-dimensional discipline.

By Josep Moscardo

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 61 × 46 cm (24.02 × 18.11 in) Signature: Signed lower area Date: 1977 Condition: Very good. Stable canvas and well-preserved paint layer. Framed: No. The painting is currently unframed. Style: Post-Impressionist Subject: Mediterranean hill town landscape Expressive Mediterranean landscape depicting a historic Spanish hill town crowned by a fortified structure overlooking clustered white and terracotta buildings. The composition is constructed through energetic, visible brushwork and a vibrant palette of warm earth tones contrasted with an intense blue sky. The artist organizes the architecture in rhythmic planes that guide the viewer’s eye upward toward the monumental structure dominating the skyline. The painting reflects the Mediterranean post-impressionist tradition, where color and structure take precedence over strict realism, resulting in a lively and decorative interpretation of the landscape. Works of this kind are particularly sought after for interior design projects thanks to their warm palette, architectural subject matter and timeless Mediterranean atmosphere. An attractive original painting combining decorative strength with the charm of mid-20th-century Spanish landscape painting. Josep Moscardó (Barcelona, 1953) is a Spanish painter, sculptor and draftsman associated with the Mediterranean post-impressionist tradition. His work is characterized by vibrant color, spontaneous brushwork and a strong interest in landscape and architectural subjects. Throughout his career he has portrayed scenes from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and other European locations, developing a style that balances expressive color with structural composition. Alongside his painting practice, he has also explored sculpture and drawing, expanding his artistic language into three-dimensional forms. His paintings appear regularly in galleries and private collections and are appreciated for their decorative strength and Mediterranean character. The Happy Farmer oil painting by Gregorio Prestopino

By Gregorio Prestopino

Located in Hudson, NY

Provenance: The Artist. Menikoff collection (friends of the artist) About this artist: Born in Little Italy in 1907, Gregorio Prestopino first set out to become a sign painter as the son of New York City immigrants. Instead, his talent provided a life-changing scholarship to the National Academy of Design, and for five years he studied drawing under C. W. Hawthorne. He spent the summer of 1934 at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. His deep involvement with the colony led him to later serve as its director in 1954. Much of Prestopino’s work was in the vein of social realism. During the 1940s and 1950s he became deeply invested in portraying everyday Manhattan and Harlem scenes. He first became interested in the Ashcan school at the National Academy of Design, and remained committed to an interest in working with urban scenes. His lively treatment of people and events revealed his affinity for sixteenth-century artist Pieter Breughel. Later in his career, he focused on producing images of nudes and picturesque New Hampshire landscapes, and investigated the relationship between color and form. Prestopino exhibited at several biennials at the Corcoran Gallery, at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art. His work was frequently shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he was awarded the Temple Gold Medal in 1946 and an additional prize in 1952. He was awarded a National Institute of Arts and Letter Grant in 1961, and in 1972 the National Academy of Design awarded him the Altman Figure Painting Award. Prestopino’s artistic cache skyrocketed when Life magazine published his images from New York’s maximum security institution Green Haven as part of its “Prison Series” in 1957. That same year his paintings and sketches of urban life were featured in the short film Harlem Wednesday. Directed by John and Faith Hubley...
