Joseph Szabo Photography

American, b. 1944

Joseph Szabo photographed his teenage students for over 25 years. After receiving his MFA in photographic studies from the Pratt Institute in 1968, he taught high school photography in Long Island, where he discovered and captured the perfect ambivalence of teenage-hood. As their high school teacher he was perfectly placed to identify the caprices, passions, and confusions that populated their lives, but equally knew how those selfsame students put on acts subject to the whirlwind of emotional states they experienced. The result of Szabo's gentle incursion into this private world was a record of American teenage culture, a culture they created for themselves. Documented in his 1978 monograph, 'Almost Grown', Szabo's work captured and released the archetypal teenage adventure through the excitements of youth and into the self-consciousness of adulthood. His most iconic image, 'Priscilla', became a celebration of the teenage experience. All those precious and heady high school years that were rarely witnessed or intruded upon by grown-ups finally revealed themselves in this one, thousand-word photograph.
